DRV8837: Latching solenoid drive

Hello,

I am designing a circuit to drive a small latching solenoid at very high speeds. The duty cycle will be 50%, on for 2s, off for 2s. I am looking to cycle the solenoid on-off at a rate of 100Hz or greater.

The solenoid is a Geeplus SIL-0211 : 24Ohms, 4V, 2.7W, 107mA release current. Is the DRV8837 a suitable driver for this application? Are there others I should consider? Can you recommend ways to maximize speed?

Hi Alex,

The DRV8837 is suitable. If you want to maximize speed, you can use the DRV8848 at lower duty cycles and higher voltage.

I am confused about the 100Hz on-off rate and the life expectancy of the solenoid. Please double check this.

Hi Rick,

Thanks for this! I was unclear when I described the duty cycle: I need it to be cycling at maximum frequency for 2s, then off for 2s. Why would you go with the DRV8848?

Would you recommend PWM over a logic interface for speed? Or does this not matter?

Hi Alex,

To keep it simple, I would go with the DRV8837 instead of the DRV8848. With the DRV8837 at 4V, you use simple GPIO logic to control the solenoid.

The DRV8848 regulates current so you can potentially energize/de-energize the solenoid faster.

Since I don't know your application, I can only point out the expected life of the solenoid is ~10 days (200k cycles at 4 seconds per cycle).
