SD387EVK: Evaluation Kit Connection Question

Part Number: SD387EVK

I am trying to drive the sma coaxial inputs of the evaluation card directly from an SDI output in our custom design from an Altera FPGA.  The output originates at the FPGA, and goes thru a high speed interconnect to a pair of pads on an XMC adapter card.  When attempting to use 2 coaxial cables to make the connections out of the adapter card to the 2 eval card inputs (6" run), it looks like we're charging capacitance in each coax line causing my eye diagram to not be present.  Would a matched wire pair set like CAT 5E or CAT 6 cable be better than coaxial cables soldered on to the XMC adapter (we would have to pull the SMA connectors off of the eval card to solder the matched pair wire set).  The coaxes we tried were Telex 405 from Times Microwave.  Note our video is 1.485 Gbps SMPTE 292 format.

  • Hi Bill,

Our apologies for such a delayed response, as we missed this post when you originally submitted it. Please let us know if you are still facing this issue and how we can help.

Regarding your question, matched pair coax cables should allow you to connect from your XMC adapter card to the SD387EVK, but this is under the assumption that you have a way of getting the XMC adapter card output to output on an SMA connector. From your description, it seems like this is not possible. Some questions:

    1. On the XMC adapter card, what do the pads look like?
    2. Is there a way to use an extra adapter board to allow you to connect XMC card output to an SMA, where you can then use your matched coax set to interface with the SD387EVK?

    Regards,
