DRA756: PMIC Powerhold mode

Part Number: DRA756
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS659039-Q1

In the DRA756 EVM, the PMIC (TPS659039) is operating in POWERHOLD mode or AUTODEVON mode? I see the Powerhold input (GPIO7) resistor is no pop. Just would like to know whether the circuit for the POWERHOLD (U141 & U142) is really required or not? If this POWERHOLD is not really required, i would like to remove this circuitry in our custom board.

  • Hi Senthil,

The difference between POWERHOLD and AUTODEVON is the requester. First is requested by hardware, and the latter - by software (OS). Everything depends on your needs and your project.

You can see for example one implementation for POWERHPLD in the AM572x EVM:

TPS datasheet section 6.4.5 Power On Acknowledge may also help. TPS659039-Q1

  • Thanks for the clarification Stan, However i would like to know in EVM5777 (DRA756 EVM), which mode the PMIC is configured to operate?
I guess it is AUTODEVON mode, but need a confirmation from you.
  • If I'm looking at the same revision PCB, then POWERHOLD is simply pulled high (i.e. powerhold = true) . That means PMIC will not power off after 8 seconds. Please power the board with no any booting image (no SD cards, sysboot doesn't point to any flash memory) . If board continue to be powered after 8 seconds, then POWERHOLD keeps power on. Otherwise, OS keeps power through i2c and powerhold pin is not enabled in OTP.
