Hello,

One of our customer is implementing their own OS with multicore(SMP) support on TDA2Ex IPU subsystem consisting of dual core cortex M4's.

They are looking for possible mechanisms for inter-core communication and looking for how it is done in TI Sysbios. Any inputs are appreciated.

Hi Prasad,

There are 2 components to the inter-core communication on the Cortex-M4 IPUs - signalling/notification and inter-core locking. We use interrupt 19 for signalling between the M4 cores. Interrupt 19 is connected between the 2 M4 NVICs and we post the interrupt in software to send a notification to the other core. Regarding inter-core locking, we have a software implementation of a mutex. The mutex variable resides in shared memory.

Is interrupt 19 same as CORTEXM4_CTRL_REG[16] INT_CORTEX_2 mentioned below? Also it mentions about other core going to sleep if used this mechanism. Can you please comment on that?

Yes, the text you shared is referring to the same interrupt. The CORTEXM4_CTRL_REG is used to trigger the interrupt.

The handshake mentioned in the TRM excerpt you shared is just one of the ways to synchronize resources between the 2 M4 CPUs. We use an inter-core spinlock for this purpose.
