AM3358 Ethernet

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM3358

Hello Team,

AM3358 supports 2 port gigabit Ethernet switch . please can you confirm whether the 2 ports works independently with 2 different IP addresses

Please share if any document link is available for more details on the AM3358 ethernet ports.

  • Hi Sudhir,

Yes, this is called Dual MAC mode. The important point is that the two MACs have to be connected to different subnets. Complete information about the Ethernet subsystem can be found in section 14 of the AM335X Technical Reference Manual Rev. J.

  • The AM335x CPSW module performs the function of a MAC for the ARM processor and a 3-port Gig Ethernet Switch with one internal port and two external ports.  The internal port connects to the the ARM processor via the internal MAC and the other two ports can be connected to external Ethernet PHYs.

When CPSW is configured to operate in Dual MAC mode, the external ports operate like they are connected to separate MACs which are connected to the ARM processor and they each can be assigned their own IP address.

When CPSW is not configured to operate in Dual MAC mode, it operates as if there is only one MAC interface connected to the ARM processor with the internal port connected to a three port Ethernet switch.  In this mode, the 3-port switch works like most external Ethernet switches.

Ethernet switches without internal MACs are not assigned an IP address because they only pass Ethernet packets from one port to another.  This is the way the Ethernet switch portion of CPSW operates when not configured in Dual MAC mode.

    Regards,
    Paul
