Beaglebone Black SPI pins

I am currently struggling trying to enable the SPI ports on the Beaglebone Black. I have tried the instructions that are posted in e-linux, up until the point of patching the kernel. I am using the most recent distribution of Debian for the Beaglebone.

Have you tried enabling the spidev? Not sure about Debian distro, but it works well on TI SDKs.

I actually figured out what the problem was, there is a pin located on the LCD display that I was using that is needed for the SPI device tree.
