ubuntu-desktop or gnome-desktop with Linux 4.1.1-ti-r6?

We spent a lot of time this past week trying to get jessie working on the BeagleBone Black. We have successfully gotten 4.1.1-ti-r6 building on an x86 host and cross compiling.  We built a hello world installable module and verified it works.  During the process, we started with 4.1.1-ti-r2 but the build broke on both the native system and on the Ubuntu based cross system. We kept moving forward all the way to ti-r6 before a build would complete successfully. I am guessing we are getting stuff that Robert has been releasing during the month of July.

So, we have a working 4.1.1-ti-r6 kernel and tried to load both ubuntu-desktop and gnome-desktop. However, it fails claiming there is something that it needs in ti-r2. In fact numerous parts of the install process fail and mention ti-r2.

I am stuck trying to figure out how to get ti-r2 to build or trying to figure out how to get the desktop packages to install on ti-r6.

Words of wisdom are greatly appreciated!!
