Hi TI Experts,

Please let me confirm the following question.

[Question]

Can customer use the TPS65217C for AM335xZCE Package with DDR3 design?

Best regards.

Kaka

  • The factory team have been notified. They will respond here.
  • We have not built any boards in this config so we can't make guarantees. But on paper it is possible to use TPS65217C/D with ZCE - both MPU and CORE domains will end up on one of the DCDC converters. You'll need to be aware that the 3.3V IO and USB will be on the LDO rail with max load of 200mA. If you need more you can use an external chip like what was used on the BeagleBone Black.

Can I ask if TPS65910 or TPS650250 have been evaluated? Those two are also options:
    TPS65217: www.ti.com/.../slvu551
    TPS650250: www.ti.com/.../slvu731
    TPS65910: www.ti.com/.../swcu093
  • Hi Ahmad,

    Thank you for your response.
I could understand that this solution is not guarantee. So, can you change the following wiki site?
    processors.wiki.ti.com/.../AM335x_Schematic_Checklist
I think that this wiki site will lead the no guarantee design(AM335xZCE with DDR3 and TPS65217C) because there is not explain about it.

    Best regards.

  • Hi Team,

Would you please provide your comments for my opinion?

    Best regards.

I will discuss with the team. The schematic checklist is for both ZCZ and ZCE package and it generically lists TPS65217x instead of talking about A/B/C/D etc.

The application note that Ahmad pointed to clearly mentions

TPS65217A is used for the AM335x processor in the ZCE package. In this package, the VDD_MPU and VDD_CORE nodes are shorted together and will only use a single power rail. TPS65217B is used for the AM335x processor in the ZCZ package. In this package, the VDD_MPU and VDD_CORE rails are separate and can use separate power rails. TPS65217C is also targeted at the AM335x processor in the ZCZ package, but the DCDC1 output voltage is set to 1.5 V to supply DDR3 memory. This version does not support AM335x RTC-only operation. TPS65217D is identical to TPS65217C, except DCDC1 is set to 1.35 V to support DDR3L.

So i dont see the need to change the wiki.

Is your customer able to pick another power solutions and AM335x does support several.

If you have specific concerns or challenges please share.

  • HI Mukul,

    Thank you for your response.
I know that the application note clearly mentions. But for ti wiki site as below is not clearly mentions about this.
    processors.wiki.ti.com/.../AM335x_Schematic_Checklist
It means that there is not any description about there is limitation to select the PMIC by use Package. So, there is a potential that some of customer leads to choose the PMIC of TPS65217C for AM335xZCE package if they only see the ti wiki site.
This is why I think this tables should be added the row of "Support AM335x Package" .

Yes, our customer can choose the other power solution at this time.
    Best regards.

    Thanks for the feedback.
Ok, let me discuss with the team and see if a corrective action is needed.
My assumption was that any customer who wants to design with these PMICs, will need to look at the PMIC application note listed.

We can simply add a foot note that urges reader to look at the application note for further details etc.

Good to know that your customer is able to chose other power solutions.
  • Hi Mukul,

    Thank you for your supporting.
I got it. If you have any updates, please let me know.
    Best regards.
