AM3359: CPSW ports use for Industrial Ethernet

Part Number: AM3359
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PROFIBUS

Hi Sitara Support Team,

I would like to know whether the standard Ethernet ports of AM335x can
use as some industrial Ethernet communications such as "Profinet",
"EtherNet/IP", "EtherCAT Master", "Ethernet POWERLINK" and "PROFIBUS", or not?
My understanding is that "EtherCAT Slave", "PROFINET RT/IRT" and "SERCOS III"
should used PRU-ICSS of AM335x.
However I would like to make sure that the standard Ethernet ports of AM335x
can use as some industrial Ethernet communications such as "Profinet",
"EtherNet/IP", "EtherCAT Master", "Ethernet POWERLINK" and "PROFIBUS".
If there are some protocols cannot be supported by the standard Ethernet pots,
please let me know.

Best regards,
Kanae

  • The software team have been notified. They will respond here.
  • Hi Kanae, for Industrial communication protocols, normally each device has 2 Eth ports for connecting devices in daisy chain, or ring topologies. In those cases PRU-ICSS offers low forward latency between ports and also low jitter which helps to achieve Real Time applications and permits to use shorter system cycles.

However, you are right, if an application is not real time (or soft real time), it is possible to use standard Ethernet ports. Below my comments to your examples:

    - EtherCAT master: Absolutely, you can use standard Ethernet Port. We have a TI desing with acontis EC-Master running on AM57x GB Eth and PRU-ICSS

    - Ethernet/IP: Yes you can, however if you want to use DLR (Ring topology), we have this feature already incorporated in our PRU-ICSS Ethernet/IP firmware. More details in TI's ICSS EthernetIP adapter developer guide

    - Powerlink: Yes you can run it on standard Eth. However, PRU-ICSS would help to reduce jitter. We are working on creating PRU-ICSS OpenPowerlink software. This will be ready for customers 1Q 2018

    - Profibus: No sure here.. Profibus uses RS-485 instead of an Eth...

    thank you,

    Paula

  • Hi Paula,

    I appreciate to your reply.
I will refer to this post.
