Linux/AM5728: Frame processing questions

Hi,

I was asked to move this question to software section, so I will appreciate if somebody could respond my below query.

AM5728 has processing specs of 60fps. What is the OPP frequency at which this is specified like 1500MHz, 1000MHz, etc? Actually I want to see if we could reduce operating frequency keeping performance similar or less degraded & getting thermal dissipation lower.

What do you mean by "frame processing"? Please be more specific.

Hi Biser,

Our application is of video analytics. In our application AM5728 is required to take data from IP camera connected at ethernet port of AM5728. Now AM5828 is specified to process 60fps of 1080X1920p resolution, so we want to at what operating frequency these specs are defined.

Problem is we are facing power dissipation issues & hence want to optimize our application with lower operating frequency while keeping performance to be modest. Hope this helps.

1080p60 fps processing spec if for hardware accelerated video IPs like VIP for camera capture, IVA for encode/decode, VPE for video processing , DSS for display. Ethernet port is not specified to capture 1080p60 RAW video. Hope you are capturing compressed 1080p60 through IP cam.

What all IP/core is running in your system? What's overall system DDR load need?

Sorry for delayed reply as I was out of office. Yes, certainly ethernet is not specified for 60 frames & these specs are for hw as mentioned by you. So we want to know at what system freq. those hw. specs are specified, for ex. can IVA encode decode 1080p60 at 1000MHz?

We plan to run both ARM & both DSP cores to maximize the performance.

I am not sure about question "What's overall system DDR load need?". Do you ask total system DDR? If yes we plan to keep 2GB DDR3.

Max clock speed for IVA is 532 MHz (OPP_HIGH). IVA will need to be clocked at 532 MHz to meet 1080p60 encode/decode performance.

Thanks for your response. I will appreciate if you could reply what approx fps AM5728 can support at 1000MHz? I ask as we are facing higher power dissipation issues & in case we happen to run at 1000MHz what fps we can expect.

Video codec encode and decode doesn't take much ARM MHz as all the processing happens on hardware accelerator IVA-HD. ARM is just used as proxy to send the command to M4 core through IPC layer, which in turn configures the IVA-HD for processing. May be 2% of ARM MHz is consumed for codec processing. This is excluding any bitstream operations that you may be doing on ARM -
like send/receive bitstream to/from network.

Thanks for this information but I specifically meant at IVA (sorry for any confusion) like how many fps it can process at 1000MHz.

IVA cannot be clocked at 1000 MHz. It's max clock speed is 532 MHz. Please read my above responses carefully.

I think it is mixed bit. I clarify as below.

1. I meant at what clock speed IVA will work when OPP is 1000MHz (OPP_NORM)? I ask this because max 532MHz clock is available with OPP_HIGH (1500MHz).
2. What fps IVA will process with OPP_NORM (1000MHz)?

In OPP_HIGH spec, you can under clock ARM at 1000 MHz and keep IVA at 532 MHz.

IVA is clocked at 430 MHz in OPP_NORM. This is 100 MHz less then OPP_HIGH. At OPP_NORM speed of 432 MHz, it cannot process 60 fps. It can handle frame rate of 40 to 55 fps, depending upon the stream tools, profile and complexity.
