TLV320DAC3101: Premature device failure

Part Number: TLV320DAC3101

Our customer's board uses the device TLV320DAC3101IRHBT and finds about 20% failure on first power-up (no audio).  The device is replaced, and continuous to function as required.  What can cause the device to fail?

Some unused inputs are not tied (left open), i.e. AIN1, AIN2, VOL/MICDET, can this be a cause of failure?

  • Hi Jaku,

Could you share more details about their startup sequence?
    - Supply voltage sequence and levels
    - Input signals into the device (most important is Reset)

The units that fail to startup are not able to work even after power-cycle? After the issue the units are not working at all in any environment/system?

  • Hi Ivan, thanks for your reply.  Once the unit fails, power-cycle does not recover the device.  Damage seems to be permanent.

Attached are plots of power supplies with respect to RESET signal.

    Thanks,

    Jaku

  • Hi Jaku,

Is the device apparently damaged just after power up? Or are you able to communicate with the device through I2C during the startup sequence?
What is the IOVDD voltage, 1.8V or 3.3V? I assume it's 3.3V. Is there a chance that RESET signal ramps a bit slower than 3.3V rail so that RESET is at VIH voltage after DVDD and IOVDD rails are completely powered up?
Is there a chance that you could share your schematic so we can review it?
If you don't want to post it on the forum you can send me a message to: ivan.salazar@ti.com
