TPA6132A2: Why the TPA6132A2 EVM has Supply Current as high as 0.5A (See Section 1.2 on the User's Guide SLOU230 ?

Part Number: TPA6132A2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA6133A2, TPA6138A2, TPA6141A2

Hi TI Support,

Question to Idd supply current to the TPA6132A.  I'm very confusing to the data sheet and EVM documents.

From The TPA6132A2 Data sheet, I read that,  Table 2, Design Parameter Shown Current is only 3mA to 3.2mA,  with input voltage range from 2.2V to 5.3V.

But, on the TPA6132A2 EVM document specified the supply current Idd =0.5A Maximum.

Please confirm that why the values were a lot different.

I do want to have a low current supply for driving  2 X32 Ohm speakers of the headset, please provide me which is the best solution?

Thanks

  • Hi David,

The information from EVM is most likely taken from another EVM documentation; some of our EVMs can be supplied by USB connection, so that's why we specify 0.5A max, although TPA6132A2EVM cannot be supplied by USB so this is a mistake.

Regarding device current consumption, it would depend on the load impedance and the signal you want to play. Using 16ohm speakers and playing a single tone like 1kHz, would give an idea of how much current the device could demand, even though on normal audio playback current consumption is lower.

  • Does TI have the current value for that condition (@ 2.5VDC, 2X32 Ohm speakers 1Khz Tone input) ?

  • David,

The following values were obtained using the EVM:
    VDD = 2.5V / 2x32ohm loads / 1kHz tone / THD+N = 1% / Supply current = 56mA
    VDD = 2.5V / 2x32ohm loads / 1kHz tone / THD+N = 10% / Supply current = 67mA

  • Hi IVAN, Would you please let me know why that High to compare to

Table 2, Design Parameter Shown Current is only 3mA to 3.2mA,  with input voltage range from 2.2V to 5.3V.

So what is these values (3mA to 3.2mA)?

    Thanks Ivan,

  • David,

Those are most likely quiescent current levels.
In addition, as mentioned before, playing 1kHz tone at full-scale (THD+N) consumes considerably more current than playing music or voice tracks.

  • Hi Ivan,

At 2XAAA batteries, I can not have to pay that 56-67mA

What is the Best solution for less current load (2 X32 Ohm) Speakers for portable devices

    Many Thanks for your reply

  • David,

Those are maximum current levels, as mentioned before current consumption during conventional audio playback will be much lower.
Next week I'll provide a table with average current consumption for different devices.

  • Ivan,

Thanks for your input. I'm looking forward to seeing your latest update.

  • David,

I'll get to do these tests on Monday. I'll upload the table once its finished.

  • David,

I performed some listening and current measurement test and got some information as below table. The test setup is the following:

    • All devices were powered by 3.3V bench supply
    • All devices had the same input signal. Stereo audio coming from PC line-out at max vol. 1 song played.
    • All devices were driving the same pair of passive over-the-ear headphones.
    Part# Max Avg Idle
    TPA6132A2 16mA 11mA 2.2mA
    TPA6133A2 18mA 15mA 7.1mA
    TPA6138A2 20mA 18mA 14mA
    TPA6141A2 5mA 3.5mA 1.3mA

I did this test only with a current meter in series with the bench supply, So take these values as reference and not a complete trustworthy source.
All devices have very good audio quality. TPA6133A2 is the one that might sound most distorted but it is most likely due to the fixed +4dB gain.

The device that shows the lowest consumption levels is TPA6141A2, which is Class-G device.

Also please take into account that this test was performed so that all devices operated under similar circumstances, it does not have anything to do with output power.
