LMK04828BEVM: No recognizable output

So I'm trying to use this card in a setup.  I've input a 10MHz, 1.3Vpp squarewave/sinewave (I've tried both), 0-1.3V as well as tried +/-0.65Vpk.  Set up DCLK0 to output 153.6MHz LVDS and cannot see a signal of any recognition to this output.  I have the output SMA connections +/-  connected with equal length SMA to SMA cables to an ADC-WB-BB Balun.  The output of the Balun is connected to the CLKIN input on J9 of a DAC3484EVM.   I'm seeing a very jittery signal output with little or no semblance of the desired signal.  The D4 LED is lit but the D5 LED is not.  This tells me that PLL1 may be locking but PLL2 is not.  I'm guessing as to what's happening here.  Attached is the setup for this card.

    I looked at your config.  On the outputs tab, it appears the reason in part for no output is the output group for CLKout0 is powered down, CLKout0_1_PD = 1.

    On the CLKin and PLLs tab, it appears you are using CLKin1 at 10 MHz.  This requires PLL1 to be operational with a valid VCXO frequency.  However PLL1 is powered down, and the 109.714 MHz is not valid for VCXO.  For both single loop and dual loop you will also need to power-up the OSCin buffer and VCO.  (OSCin_PD = 0, VCO_PD=0).

    I recommend loading the default configuration for 122.88 MHz input, then going to the Set Modes tab and using the "Set Single Loop" button if you'd like to generate a single loop configuration.

    As for configuration, in single loop mode, 10 MHz --> 3072 MHz for 153.6 MHz output clock generation will require a phase detector frequency of 2 MHz, so PLL performance will suffer.  Also on LMK0482x, when using single loop, you must provide the reference to OSCin.  On LMK04832, a footprint compatible part it is possible to use CLKinX as a reference to PLL2 for single loop mode.

    In dual loop mode, 10 MHz --> 122.88 MHz PLL1 VCXO --> 3072 MHz PLL2 VCO for 153.6 MHz output clock generation will require a phase detector frequency of 80 kHz for PLL1, which is ok given jitter cleaning of VCXO.  Then a 122.88 MHz phase detector frequency can be used for PLL2 which will result in good performance.

    I've attached a configs I generated by using the default configuration, then modifying the state or using the single loop button.

  • OK. The dual-loop load generates the correct frequencies. The problem I have is that I need all outputs to be driven/synchronized to the 10MHz input on CLKin1* on the EVM. I've been using the NSC Clock Design Tool to help me set up a dual PLL scenario, by it's unclear to me as to how the 122.88MHz on-board crystal oscillator input on CLKin0 is necessary in order to achieve lock. I can see both LEDs are lit indicating that both PLLs are locked. How do I ensure synchronization to the 10MHz rising edge?
  • I have a similar issue using the 128MHz output to be the CLKIN1* input to a 2nd LMK04828BEVM in order to generate two LVDS outputs at frequencies 350MHz and 490MHz. Should I also use the on-board 122.88MHz oscillator so as to have the PLLs form a stable closure? The clock design tool doesn’t clearly show the use of this input as there is only one input clock in the upper left of the GUI window.

    Attached is my setup using the clock design tool that won't lock either PLL.  I've tried using the linked Webbench Clock architect tool with the NSC Clock design Tool and can't get the two to agree.  The Webbench tool doesn't give me the PLL1 R and N dividers or the PLL 2 R, N, and N Pre dividers that are need to be set in the TICS Pro tool.

  • Yes Rob helped me with the DAC3484EVM loop filter design and finalized all the LMK04828BEVM setups as well.  I am having trouble moving signal output around to different output ports.  For the LMK04828BEVM receiving 10MHz input and producing two 153.6MHz LVPECL20 outputs on ClkOut0 and ClkOut1, I would like to move the ClkOut1 output to ClkOut10 or 11, but cannot seem to get the card to do that.  Not sure what's going on here.

  • Hello Ron,

    Uncheck CLKout10_11_PD by CLKout10/11.
    Set Clock Output Select = Divider+DCC+HS (to match what you have for CLKout0/1)
    Select LVPECL20 as the format for DCLKout10_FMT.
    * Note, if using LVPECL, CLKout10 needs to have emitter resistors to get an output. By default I think CLKout10 is not setup for LVPECL.. if you're using the EVM, this could be your problem. Could also be your problem if you didn't set your board to have proper termination for LVPECL on that output. In which case you could use HSDS 8 mA which is a higher swing output like LVDS which has similar swing to LVPECL. For these outputs when AC coupled to load, you should place a 560 ohm resistor across the output pins.
    DCLKout10_DIV = 20 to get your 153.6 MHz. You could also type 153.6 MHz into output frequency and it will figure the divide out.
    * Your divider may also be getting reset and preventing an output signal. If you set check SYNC_DIS10 under the divider value, this would ignore the SYNC and allow your outputs to come out.
    You may want to uncheck DDLY_PD to ensure phase alignment with other clocks at startup.
    > In this case you will also want to uncheck all SYNC_DISx bits, provide the SYNC, then re-enable. See steps 1 to 3 of section 9.3.2.1.1 example. This basic divider output SYNC applies if your using JESD204B or not.
