LMC555: Monostable operation is not disabling.

Part Number: LMC555

Hi.

I am trying to use a LMC555 as a hardware watchdog that controls a higher powered signal.  My intention is to raise the reset pin to enable the signal and then lower the reset pin to disable the signal.  If the reset pin were to never be lowered, the 555 timer would disable the signal (watchdog).  I should only be enabling the reset pin for variable time between 40 us and 125 us, with the timer shutting off at 181.5 us.  What I am seeing is that if I keep the reset pin held high, the signal never turns off.

The LMC555 is in monostable operation.  I am toggling the reset pin, so that I can have a fixed maximum duration, but have a variable duration for most uses.

My design is the following:

Thanks for any help,

Dan K.

  • Dan,

The timer has three inputs and each input is honored in a fixed priority.  Greatest to least priority is RESET, TRIGGER, then THRESHOLD.

All long as trigger is low, threshold will have no effect. A capacitor plus other components can make the trigger input edge triggered.

    R & C set edge recovery rate

Input resistor limits peak input current
