ADS1118: Datasheet D (2013) contradicts (sort of) Datasheet E (2015) without strong mention in version history

Part Number: ADS1118

According to datasheet D I am likely going to set bit 0 of the configuration register to "0", as it's not used.

Acording to datasheet E I must set it to 1.

Wat the what?

Cat

  • Catalin,

Use the newest version of the datasheet and set the bit 0 of the configuration register to 1 for any writes to the device. Note that the datasheet change doesn't come from a change in the device. I believe that we put it in the newer version of the datasheet because it's easier to give some uniform guidance instead of leaving it open-ended.

  • I know I can do that NOW but what about units in the field? If anything breaks one could say I didn't follow the datasheet.
It is WRONG to change it this way.
Not Used is NOT open-ended. It's clearly not used.
  • Catalin,

I've checked and bit 0 of the configuration register is read-only, the write won't do anything in the operation of the device.

The datasheet change isn't for a device operation change or error. The datasheet change was made because we've been trying to make datasheets less ambiguous in the operation of our devices. In this case setting a bit to high instead of giving no guidance to the write of the bit.

I would treat this as a recommendation, but it will not affect the operation of the device.

  • Please escalate.
You don't seem to understand the problem: I now know that I can use either, but according to your latest datasheet "E" I have product in the field that's wrong.

I am a professional engineer. I can't have people looking at your datasheet and my code and say my code is wrong, OR blame my code not following the datasheet if something goes wrong in the field.

We are NOT STUPID! We know what "not used" is. You can't change from "not used" to "must be 1" even though nothing has changed.
    PLEASE ESCALATE!

  • Dear Catalin,

this matter was escalated to me. My name is Joachim Wuerker. I am the Systems Manager at TI responsible for our Delta-Sigma ADC developments and with that my team is also responsible for the ADS1118 datasheet.

I am very sorry that the changes we made in our latest datasheet revision caused some trouble for you.

May I offer to set up a call with you to discuss this matter and how we can solve it in a way that works both for you and TI?
I would contact you using your email address provided in your MyTI Account if you are okay with it. Please let me know.

    Sincerely yours,
  • Dear Joachim,

    Yes, please.

You can use the registered email address.

    Thanks,

    Cat

  • Alright Catalin.

You should see an email from me shortly.

    Regards,
  • Hi Cat,

thanks a lot for your time on the phone today.

As discussed, I am making a commitment to update the register bit description of Bit 0 in the Config Register of ADS1118 during the next datasheet revision. At this moment I can however not say when the next datasheet revision will happen.

I am closing this thread for now, even though I understand that the issue is not 100% resolved for you until the datasheet is updated.

    Regards,
