ADS1220: How to choose a proper multiplexer for temperature module

Part Number: ADS1220
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TS3A44159,

Hi Team,

My customer is surveying components for RTD temp. modules(end equipment is AC motor driver with temp. monitoring, like PLC does). He selects ADS1220 as data converter and would like to know if TS3A44159 is a proper MUX for this kind of application since there will be multi RTD input sources on this project.

Besides, is there any guideline that can help customers to choose a right solution?

Thanks a lot.

  • Hi Vincent,

do you know how many RTDs and which type (2-, 3-, and/or 4-wire) the customer needs to measure? Based on that we could help to come up with the most suitable circuit implementation.

In most cases the requirements for an external Mux in an RTD application aren't very stringent. But it depends where in the circuit the Mux is used. E.g is the Mux used in front of the analog inputs, is it used to route the excitation currents to different RTDs, or is it used to switch between different reference resistors?
It would therefore be helpful to understand what their planned implementation looks like.

In many cases I have simply recommended the CD405x series of multiplexers because most customers have it in their approved component list already and it is cheap.

    Regards,
