ADS131M08EVM: Compatability check and Validation of Real time capability.

Part Number: ADS131M08EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LAUNCHXL-F28379D, , ADS131M08

Hello

I want to enquire if ADS131M08EVM is compatible with Launchxl-F28379D when connected as BoosterPack. Also, I want to ask about J11 and J12 pins, are they readymade slots. Can you share the below side image of the board?

Adding to the query,

1.Are there available codes for interfacing the ADS board with the launchpad?

2. Can I derive simultaneous waveforms, using Simulink or LabView in realtime.

3.Does it support standalone application?

  • Mohammed,

I don't have an ADS131M08EVM with me, so I won't be able to get you a photo until tomorrow. However, J11 and J12 are 10x2 surface mount 100mil pin receptacles that are the basically the same form factors as launchpads. You can see what they look like from the PCB layers at the back of the User Guide:

It's probable that the ADS131M08EVM is compatible with the LaunchXL-F28379D so that you could use that to communicate with the EVM. However, I'm not entirely sure. We had set those pins so that we could connect to a board called the PAMB that we use in some of our other EVMs. I'll need to check for more information on the launchpad.

Going back to your remaining questions:

    1. We only have some example code on how to run the ADS131M0x devices. It is not specific to the launchpad. You can find it here:

    www.ti.com/.../SBAC254

    2. These example code are very basic and are used only to communicate back and forth between the master and device. The example code is basically meant for configuring the device and reading data.

    3. As in 2. It is not meant to support a standalone application.

  • Hi joseph,

    Thanks for your response.

Yes can u confirm me, if it can be connected and runned on my Launchpad and also show me the bottom side of the ads board (board pic, not pcb design).

If it is, i can consider buying the two.

" As in 2. It is not meant to support a standalone application."

Can you clarify me this again, if I connect the ads to my launchpad...as a whole can I aquire data n process it and display it to an external lcd (basically a standalone model)? Please do clarify me again on this.

  • Mohammed,

I ran a quick check based on the ADS131M08EVM pinouts through J11 and J12. Here, you can see the Launchpad pin mapping from J11 and J12 of the EVM:

From this, I had a json file that I've created for the ADS131M08E can use to verify the booster pack from this site:

    https://dev.ti.com/bpchecker/#/

Here you would select the LAUNCHXL-F28379D as the launch pad, and then use the json file for the booster pack (you'll need to load this file for the booster pack and make sure the Category and Maker is set to all. Then you can go back and look at the Compatibility Checker:

From this, you should be able to plug the two together.

Note, we design the EVMs as an evaluation platform for our devices. They aren't designed for any particular application. I would note that I'm not an expert on any of the LaunchPad boards, and I don't think I'd be able to help with any development. I'm sure that you'd be able to send your data to an LCD, but again, I'm not going to be able to help with that.

  • Mohammed,

In case you still need a picture of the bottom of the EVM, it looks like this:

Also, for the link in the previous post, you would open this up as a text file, but save it as a *.json file. That is how the checker uses the file.

  • Hello joseph,

    Thanks for forwarding the picture.

After looking at te bottom, I see there is a non existence of connecting female slots on J11 and J12, which is a connection issue for us.

So how do we populate these pins onto my launchpad, do we have to consider soldering?..or do we have some sort of connectors in the market which will solve the connection issue.

And if requested, can these pins (J11 n J12) be mounted with connectors before packaging n shipping to us.

    Also adding to the enquiry.

Does all 8 channels have signal isolation?

    Mohammed

  • Mohammed,

For J11 and J12, you would need to buy the appropriate connector and solder them on yourself. We wouldn't be able to assemble that for you. The connectors can be found in the ADS131M08EVM User's Guide in the Bill of Materials (as an unpopulated component):

The inputs of the ADS131M08 do not have signal isolation. The input voltages must be within the common-mode input range of the ADC.

  • Hello Joseph,

Thanks again for the swift reply.

Is there any guideline for the type of solder or soldering technique I must follow?

To my last question, I would ask, are each channels interferance proof from the successive channel when all 8 channels are considered with max sampling rate?

What should be the maximum thorouput to avoid such situation?

    Thanks,

    Mohammed

  • Mohammed,

For the connectors on J11 and J12, I don't really have any recommendation on the solder. For the devices, we do have specific temperature profiles for running soldering machines, but we don't make these connectors, and you should see if they have any particular recommendations. I've soldered some of these connectors on other boards, and I've just done them by hand.

For question about channel-to-channel interference, the crosstalk between channels is listed as -120dB. Any interference would be very small.
