ADS1248: Do you have any lower price device which has similar function with ADS1248?

Part Number: ADS1248
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS124S08, ADS124S06, REF5025

 Hello guys,

One of my customers is using ADS1248 for their current products. They are going to start developping next product soon.

One of the next product features is lower price than current products.

 Their questions are the followings.

Q1. Do you have any device which has similar function with ADS1248?

Q2. Do you have any plan to RTM any new device which has similar function with ADS1248 and lower price?

Your reply would be much appreciated.

 Best regards,

 Kazuya Nakai.

  • Hi Kayuza-san,

The ADS124S08 is the next-generation version of the ADS1248. Compared to the ADS1248, the ADS124S08 offers:

    • More input channels (12)
    • Higher data rates (up to 4 kSPS max)
    • Smaller size (5 mm x 5mm QFN  / 5 mm x 5 mm TQFP)
    • Lower power
    • Better noise performance (19 nVRMS)
    • Low drift VREF (10 ppm/C max)
    • Diagnostic features

The ADS124S08 is also slightly lower cost compared ADS1248, so this should be the ADC your customer uses in their next design. Please let me know if you need any more information.

  •  Hello Bryan,

Thank you very much for your reply. The information is very helpful for the customer and me.

Could I ask you the following additional question?

     Q. ADS124S08 is 12 channel input. Why it is not 8 channel input? Is it for reducing cost per channel or 12 channel input is getting defalt standard recently?

Thank you again and best regards,

     Kazuya Nakai.

  • Hi Kazuya-san,

12 input channels just enables more flexible routing for precision measurements and the ability to measure more sensors, including RTDs and thermocouples.

Also, six of the 12 inputs have alternate functionality, so if the customer only needs 8 analog inputs, but needs 3x GPIOs to control an external switch, the ADS124S08 can support this configuration.

Or, if the customer only needs 6 analog inputs, they can use the ADS124S06, which is a pin compatible 6-channel version of the ADS124S08. We also have 16-bit versions of both devices.

  •  Hello Bryan,

Thank you very much for your reply. I could understand well.

Could you please give me your comments for the following question?

     Q. The customer want to reduce the cost of this ADC portion. Do you think it is effective for lower cost than ADS124S08 or ADS1248

if the ADC portion consists of 2 devices, for example ADC(24bit 2kSPS or higher perforemance) device and MUX+PGA+VREF device?

Is there any device combination to achive lower cost?

Your comments would be very helpful.

Thank you again and best regards,

     Kazuya Nakai.

  • Hi Kazuya-san,

The ADS124S08 is lower cost compared to ADS1248, as you can see on their respective product folders. So the ADS124S08 will be the best device to choose

For the performance level, the ADS124S08 offers a very competitive cost. The ADS124S08 offers an internal 12-ch mux, a low-noise PGA, and a low-drift VREF similar to a REF5025. If you need all of these components, then choosing the ADS124S08 will offer the best combination of cost, performance, and integration. I don't believe buying discrete components will offer any real benefit, and will likely cost more, take more time to design, and will consume additional PCB space.

I hope this helps answer your questions

  •  Hi Bryan,

Your comments are very helpful for the customer and me. I will propose ADS124S08 to the customer strongly.

Thank you very much and best regards,

     Kazuya.
