TAS3204 being replaced with PCM3070

Hey there,

I can't really see much useful information on the miniDSP cores used in the PCM3070 and how they relate functionally compared to the TAS3024 that it is supposed to be replacing. Is there an instruction set pdf for the miniDSP that I can read to determine if I can actually use that chip as a replacement?

Can I still create my own components for purepath for the PCM3070?

Thanks

~David

    David,

The instruction set of TAS3204 and PCM3070 is different. If you have the need to create your own components, please contact your local sales rep. who should be able to direct you to the right person.

    Regards,

    J-

J - I don't have a local sales rep here in Australia. Most of my communication is done through these forums since the technical support / office closest is in Singapore and I rarely get timely responses.

I understand they have different instruction sets. I'm just asking if I can create my own components for the PCM3070 in the same way as I have been with the TAS3204?

If I get access to the Extranet for the PCM3070, will that grant me access to the instruction set for that chip?

    Thanks again

    David.

    David,

Sorry for the delay. You cannot make your own blocks for the PCM3070, and we don't release the instruction set. You can only drag and route pre-made blocks that exist in PurePath Studio (PPS).

As you said, you can register to download PPS and see if the blocks there meet your needs.

If you're happy with TAS3204, you can keep using it, we have no plans to obsolete it; it's just that the applications support on it is even MORE limited...

    Hey there,

Well, fundamentally no, we're not completely happy with the TAS3204 - it works but it's not perfect. And the need to create our own components was important. We're looking for the solution for the next iteration of our design - I already downloaded the PPS for the PCM3070, and it doesn't have everything we need.

At the moment we're faced with moving to a purely CPU based solution and doing the DSP implementation completely manually, it just makes development a lot more complicated. Unless you can recommend a better replacement than the PCM3070?

It looks like any of the chips that use the miniDSP architecture don't allow you to create your own dsp blocks within PPS, and they won't release the programming reference manual to developers. At least with the 3204 I can create my own algorithms, I've yet to find a replacement that lets me do it as easily.
