PCM2906 USB Codec

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM2912A, TMS320C5533

For a current application I need an USB audio codec with analog input (stereo) and s/pdif output.

It shall be possible to route the analog input signal to the s/pdif output. I think, this is not directly possible within the PCM2906 but via USB interface, right?

Second important question: When I play audio content like DTS or one of the numerous Dolby formats on the PC, what does the Codec with this content? Feedthrough or downmixing to stereo?

I need a real feedthrough of this multichannel formats. Is this possible with the PCM2906?

Thanks a lot.

Regards

Martin

  • It is not possible mix directly in the chip. It is possible in the computer software via USB which has mixing functionality.

Only PCM2912A has analog mixing functionality. It can mix mono microphone to the headphone output.

I have experience, that it is not possible to play encoded signals like DTS via PCM29XX chips. They accept only PCM encoded signal.

  • Hi Pavel,

thanks for your reply. Audio mixing via software on the host computer would be ok.

Do you know any other audio codec which accepts encoded signals like DTS and passes them through to s/pdif output?

    Martin

  • Hi Martin,

I have only experience with onboard S/PDIF output which can send DTS. Any simple USB codecs probably doesn't have this possibility. First try to read USB audio class 2.0, because it is possible that you can't do it with standard USB audio drivers inside operating system. Also there will be possible to build proprietary hardware based on the TMS320C5533 and proprietary drivers, but it will not be too easy.

    Best regards, Pavel
