PCM2906 Minimum Operating Temperature

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM2906C

The PCM2906 minimum specified temperature range is -25°C, while the absolute minimum ambient temperature rating under bias is -40°C. If an application requires regular operation down to -40°C, what are the major repercussions to performance? It is suspected the part will function fine at -40°C, other than that the DAC and ADC accuracies will be out of spec (which is of no concern for this application). Could you please comment on whether the -40°C tolerance of this part will suffice, or if an alternative solution is available?

  • Hi, Akeem,

PCM2906 is NRND. The replacement is PCM2906C.

This device is rated to -25C. The -40C rating is for storage, not for operation.

I don't believe any of the USB Audio devices are rated to -40C.

  • Hi Don,

The customer is very persistent in using this part, though I have recommended other solutions that can meet the -40C requirement. I have asked the customer to explain the use-case of the application, what the environment is, and how long it may be subjected to -40C temperatures. They are seeking TI's final response regarding the use of the PCM2906C at <-25C based on the application details provided:

"The use-case for this product – like most of our products – isn’t precisely known. What we do know is few of our customers actually have a need for -40C usage except as an occasional (if not rare) start-up condition. Once up and running, such applications self-heat enough to significantly raise the PCB temperature. So I’d say this chip wouldn’t be subject to extended periods at -40C, but rather occasional short periods during system warm-up."

  • Hi, Akeem,

I can not recommend usage of our devices outside of data sheet specifications.

The customer will have to determine the applicability of this device to their application under their anticipated operating conditions.

  • Thanks, Don! I will continue to advise the customer to consider using an Audio CODEC + MCU combination with the appropriate temperature ratings. Otherwise, the risk of using the PCM2906C at -40C will be up to their discretion.
