Cant get my PCM9211EVM-U to output

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM9211EVM-U, PCM9211

Hello

I'm new to this, and quite embarrassed to ask such elementary questions.

First, the manual  sbau174 says in section 1.4 that the control software "comes with several script examples. . ."  I cannot find these script examples in the codec control download.  All I see for scripts is the initialization procedure.  I'm sure I'm just not observing something obvious.  Could you help me find these script examples?

Second, I am simply trying the "Play Back Digital Audio Signals via USB" test outlined in TI's SBAA179 Application Report on my PCM9211EVM-U boards.  I am configuring the CodecControl path per Figure 7 of the application note.  I attach a screen shot of  my configuration

Here are my register settings as a result

I have not changed any of the jumpers from the as-received condition.

My procedure is to simply try to read an output result for MPO0, while inputting a tone (4KhZ) from the pc through the usb.  The tone is being provided by onlinetonegenerator.com through my PC.  I clearly hear the tone when the usb is unplugged, and I carefully checked my sound settings on the control panel functions of my WIndows 7 PC so that USB is being output when the USB is connected..   My optical output is being analyzed with a Rohde&Schwarz Audio Analyzer DC . . . 110kHz.  I detect nothing for my output.  I did put an oscilloscope probe on the usb #3 pin, and note that the waveform changes a lot as the online tone generator is turned off and on.  Once again, I'm sure I'm missing something very obvious.

I hate asking you these easy things, but can you help me to get my boards to output tones over S/PDIF coax or optical (coax preferred) ?   Thanks in advance

  • Got it to work!  just pulled W9 jumper, deactivating U7 gate.

  • Hi Steven,

I am glad you were able to get it to work and appreciate that you posted your solution.

  • Well, more elementary stuff

I am trying the SPDIF coax to PC default application, that appears to load on startup of of the codec. I am getting lots of signal, both with and without w9 jumper.  I am running a tone from my audio analyzer into the spdif coax at 1 KHz and am expecting to see the tone on my pc..  I am not getting what I expect.  Here are my register settings after initializing

    00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
      00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
      00 00 01 04 00 01 81 00 03 0C FF FF 00 00 00 04
      02 1A 22 22 00 02 02 00 08 08 00 00 00 00 FF FF
      C0 FF 02 00 00 00 D7 D7 00 00 FF FF FF FF FF FF
FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF 00 00 00 00 00 00
      44 10 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 11 00 00 0F 40
      00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 3D 00 00 00 00 00 01 FF

    Here is my codec diagram

I have checked the spdif from the analyzer.  All sampling rates are 44.1 KHz.  Here are the signals I see off the pc with w9 jumper in place (frequency and time domain)

Here are the signals without the jumper in place.

I have shown you cases for the W9 jumper attached (shunt), and not attached (open) The rest of the jumpers are as-received, namely W1 through W8 have the jumpers (shunt), W10 has a jumper (shunt), W11 has no jumper (open) w12 through w15 have jumpers (shunt) All of the P connections have no jumpers or connectors and are open.  There is only a BNC connection using an RCA adapter onto the SPDIF coax port, and a mini usb connection onto the usb connector.

Once again, Im sure Im doing something stupid, and I hope you can help me out.

    Regards

    Steve

  • Hi Steve,

W10 chooses if the SPDIF coax goes to either RXIN0 or RXIN1, the middle pin is the signal from the connector and pin 1 is RXIN0, pin 3 is RXIN1. Is this jumper matched up with your settings?

As explained in the PCM9211 EVM users guide W9 enables or disables digital output from the PCM9211 to go to the TAS1020b, which is what enables Audio over USB. So in your case you should keep W9 installed.
