Why the through-hole components in the output filters on the PCM4104EVM?

Hello TI Engineers

I'm studying the PCM4104EVM schematic/BOM and I noticed that all of the components in the filtering section are through-hole (axial or radial leads).  Why is that when the rest of the circuit is done in SMD?  It makes me think there was some specific reason for this choice considering the higher manufacturing cost for through-hole.

Also, I am wondering if the op-amp protection resistors (R57-R64) are over-specified at 0.1%.  This accuracy seems quite unnecessary, I would have thought that 5% would be fine.

Kind regards,

Brian

  • HI Brian,

The through hole components were chosen as the team who designed the board most likely believed those parts to be the best performance/quality, since this was over 10 years ago when the board was designed this might have changed.

We do not have data on how the tolerance of the op-amp protection resistors will effect performance. I am not sure if this tolerance was required.
