TLV320AIC3110: TLV320AIC31xx and TLV320DAC31xx Power Consumption Characterization

Part Number: TLV320AIC3110

Hi there, I'm trying to get an idea of how much the TLV320AIC3110 Stereo Audio Codec will draw when both of it's 1W speakers are active. The "TLV320AIC31xx and TLV320DAC31xx Power Consumption"Characterization" App note Pg. 9 has a bunch of power consumption data using various processing blocks, but they all sit at around 75mA. The datasheet specifies a maximum output power of 540mA, so not sure where this 75mA power consumption figure fits in, when both Class-D driven speakers are going. Could you shed some light on this? I would expect the max power consumption to be 540mA x 2 (2 speakers - 100% efficiency!), plus whatever the Analog/Digital circuitry in the chip are drawing.

Many Thanks,

Dave

  • Hi, David,

As mentioned in the app note, the power consumption depends of the AIC31xx/DAC31xx register configuration (mainly it depends of the processing blocks). Could you provide a script with the register configuration that you are planning to use in your application? I can make some measurements with this register configuration in order to provide the approached current/power consumption values.

    Best regards,

  • Thanks Luis. It's early stages so we don't have any scripts written yet, we haven't started testing with the IC.

The numbers just don't make sense to me - if the speakers are on and being driven - they will be drawing hundreds of mW at least - and yet all of these specs are ~75mA. How can you drive two x 1W speakers and only draw 75mA of current? Am i missing something? Does this number not include the power consumed from driving the speakers themselves, is it only the DAC power consumption as opposed to overall power consumption?

    Cheers,

    Dave

  • Sorry 75mW, not 75mA ;)
  • Hi, David,

It seems that all the tests described in the document are made without a any sound. The document mentions:

"...the DAC modulator is excited by playing a few seconds of sound after which, the sound is stopped and
    the current measurement is taken..."

This means that there's no sound and the Class-D amplifier is operating at the minimum power. The power consumption depends of the input sound and the codec configuration. So, if a sound is played, the power consumption would be higher.

  • Thanks Luis. A quick follow up; I'm designing a high PSRR regulator to feed A3V3 (Analog Supply), but am not sure what the max current this supply will draw - can't see reference to this anywhere in the datasheet. Any ideas?

    Cheers,
    Dave
  • Hi, David,

These are the normal considerations that we recommend for the external power supplies:

    AVDD - ~50mA
    DVDD - ~50mA
SPxVDD - If using SPK amps, add (max pwr delivered/efficiency/supply * #channels)
IOVDD - negligible, decoupling takes care of the spikes.
HVDD - If using HVDD to power HP amps, add (max pwr delivered * 2 channels * 2)

    Best regards,
    Luis Fernando Rodríguez S.
  • Great Luis, that's exactly what I needed. One last q - for the Speaker supplies, if I have both speakers going at 1W, I guess I need to multiply 2W by the speaker driver efficiency to calc power/current draw from the supply, but there is no figures for this in the datasheet?

    Cheers for all your help,
    Dave
  • Hi, Dave,

Unfortunately, we don't have figures for this in the datasheet. All this information was taken from some calculations on our EVM devices, typical circuits and TI designs.
