PCM2904: Windows Support

Part Number: PCM2904
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM2906C

Hi team,

We are looking at the PCM2904 to be able to take stereo microphone input in our application and send it over USB.

We have created boards with the PCM2904 and when we plug it into a Linux machine, we are seeing that it shows up as a mono input device but it is sending 2 channels of audio. However, when we plug it into a Windows machine, we see that it shows up a mono input device but here it is only sending 1 channel of audio.

What do we have to do to send both channels of audio on Windows? Do we have any updated drivers that we can use for Windows 7/10?

Also, I noticed for the PCM2906, we have a C variant, the PCM2906C. It looks like we do not have a C variant for this device, is there a reason for that?

Akash Patel

  • Hi, Akash,

The revisions of the USB audio codecs were done to fix some known bugs/issues, unfortunately the PCM2904 was not revised as it was decided to update the PCM2906 only. I would recommend you to use the PCM2906C instead of the '2904, these devices share the same general operation, electrical characteristics and performance, the only difference is the optional S/PDIF interface in the '2906.

  • Hi Diego,

Are you suggesting that we would not see these issues if we were using the PCM2906C? Are these verified issues on the PCM2904? Why are we seeing the issue occur on Windows but not on Linux?

  • Hi Akash,

I just tested the EVM of the PCM2906C  and it worked normally in Windows so you shouldn't have any problem with this device. Something to consider is that the recording format of the device can be modified in Windows, so I would recommend to check these settings with the PCM2904 just to discard any windows configuration issue.

  • Hi Diego,

It turns out that we had to modify the microphone settings in Windows to accept both channels and it looks like it is working fine now. Thanks for your help.
