PCM5102A: PCM5102 analog out to PGA2311 generates clicking noise

Part Number: PCM5102A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PGA2311, PCM5102,

Hallo,

in my current design I connect the analog Audio Outputs from the PCM5102 DA Converter (using the suggested Output filter 470R+2,2nF)  to the Input of a PGA2311 adjustable Gain stage.

My Problem is, when I change the gain of the PGA2311, audible clickings are present. I think it should be the little DC Offsetvolage on the Output of the PCM5102. Does anyone knows how to solve my Problem?

Thanks.

  • Hi, Ruediger,

Welcome to E2E, Thanks for your interest in our products!.

The outputs of the PCM5102A are ground centered, even if there is a small offset present I think it should not cause click issues. The PGA2311 includes a Zero-Crossing Detection feature that is used to minimize noise artifacts during gain level transition. If this feature is disabled, audio glitches might be heard when making gain changes, Could you please verify that ZCEN (pin 1) signal of the PGA2311 is HIGH?

  • Hi Diego,
in my design ZCEN is high. It makes no sense if ZCEN is enabled or disabeld. Clicking noise is present when I change the gain. I think my pcb is well designed. I have seen in some designs, they have added a 10 Ohm series Resistor in the +5VD line. Make this sense?
At the moment I do not know what kind of problem this is.

    Ruediger
  • Hi, Ruediger,

Thanks for the feedback.Could you provide more information about the applications where the resistor is added? It doesn't seems like a normal application. Have you tried disconnecting the PCM5102A from the PGA and monitor the PGA behavior with a different audio source to isolate if the issue is in the PGA or PCM?.
