PCM4222EVM: Focusrite 18i8 not syncing properly to SPDIF

My Focusrite 18i8 DAW interface will not sync properly to the SPDIF out of my PCM4222EVM.  My Tascam US800 will sync perfectly fine to the PCM4222EVM.  Also, when I go from the SPDIF out of the PCM4222EVM to the US800 running on another computer and direct monitoring it out through the SPDIF of that into the 18i8 and sync to SPDIF, the 18i8 syncs perfectly to it.  So, there is something about a direct SPDIF connection between the PCM4222EVM and the 18i8 that is not working right.  I have used multiple cable and power supplies for the PCM4222EVM and have no clue as to why this is happening.  Specifically, when the 18i8 is set to SPDIF sync to the PCM4222EVM, just the same way as with the US800, the sync lock light comes on but flashes randomly and of course the sound is blissful distortion and pops and everything wonderful about non-syn'c digital audio.  The 18i8 will sync to itself looping a cable SPDIF out/in.
