TLV320DAC3120: Query regarding using a power amplifier at output of TLV320DAC3120 to connect higher wattage speaker

Part Number: TLV320DAC3120
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV320DAC3203, TPA2013D1, TAS5411-Q1

Hi,

We are using TLV320DAC3120 DAC in our project. We are using a 0.8W and 8ohm speaker at its output. But as the speaker performance is not good, so we are thinking of changing the speaker to 2W-3W/8Ohm.

Can we use a power amplifier at the output of TLV320DAC3120 so that we can drive 8Ohm Speaker upto 2.5W continuously.

TLV320DAC3120  can support upto 1.5W for 8Ohm and 2.5W for 4Ohm Speaker.

Please suggest

Thanks

  • Hi Gupta,

    Welcome to e2e.
You can connect an amplifier at the output of TLV320DAC3120. You should use the HPOUT to do this.
If you need stereo solution you can look into TLV320DAC310x or TLV320DAC3203.

  • Hi Ivan.

    Thanks for your reply.

We need to drive 2.5 W - 3 W 8 ohm speaker. Please suggest a suitable audio amplifier that we can directly connect at HPOUT.

We are using this for automotive application and suggested amplifier should support temperature -40°C to 85° and preferably automotive grade.

    Thanks,

    Shubham Gupta

  • Hi Gupta,

You could take a look at TPA2013D1 for the external amplifier.

  • Hi Ivan,

    Thanks for your suggestions.

We have 12V / 5V in our system, can we directly apply this voltage to Amplifier ( TPA2013D1 ) as we do not need Boost to be used, as it will further add efficiency loss.

    Kindly Suggest.

    Thanks,

  • Gupta,

You can shutdown the boost on TPA2013D1 by using SDb pin. And supply 5V to VDD and VCCIN.

  • Hi Ivan,

As per customer requirement, we have to go with Automotive grade Audio Amplifier, for this requirement we came acros TAS5411-Q1 Class-D audio amplifier.
We will be using 8 Ohm Speaker with 2.5 Watt Continuous power.

As all the spec. are given in the datasheet of TAS5411-Q1 are at 4 ohm. Though it can drive from 2Ohm-16Ohm (as per specs)
So Please confirm that it can be used with 2.5 W, 8 ohm speaker.
    Thanks
  • Hi Gupta,

Based on TAS5411-Q1 specs, this device could work for your application.
If you need further support on TAS5411-Q1 please upload a new post on Audio Amplifiers Forum and the responsible team will take care of it.
