ADC and DAC for TMDSDSK6713

Hi,

I'm new to TI's line of DSP products and was hoping I could find some advice here. I'm prototyping a low latency device for a biological application. The device needs to input two analog voltage channels via an ADC, do some processing that involves using the input voltage as the input variable to a simple equation, and then output the value as a voltage via a DAC channel. Each pair would be independent, i.e. AI1 is the input used for AO1, and AI2 is used for A02. The application needs 16-bit resolution on the ADCs and DACs at 20kHz per channel. It would be nice to have a +/- 10V input range, but I can condition the input to be smaller, say +/- 1V or +/- 2V. The specifications mentioned are the minimum requirements, so there would be nothing wrong with a higher sample rate or resolution, or more channels.

The TMS320C6713 DSP Starter Kit seems like a good place to start, however, it doesn't integrate the ADC and DAC component that the application requires. Next Dimension Technology's AD6M daughter card is almost what I would need, I think, but it's only 12-bit. From some of the other posts TI makes something called the 5-6K Interface Evaluation Module as well as a number of other ADC and DAC evaluation modules. I apologize for my ignorance about your product line: when using the evaluation modules (EVMs) do I need to purchase both the EVM and the appropriate ADC/DAC chip or is the chip included with the EVM? Can you provide some more information about the daughter card as well as a recommendation for ADC and DAC modules I would need to assemble a working prototype?

Thanks very much,

Nicholas

    Hi Nicholas,

I don't think we'll have anything 'off the shelf' to give you exactly what you are looking for.  The 5-6K Interface board is basically a carrier board that breaks out the two 80-pin daughter card connectors found on the TMS320C6713 DSK.  The card breaks out the two available McBSP ports from the DSP onto two serial interface headers giving you the ability to run independent ADC and DAC channels as you describe above.  It also breaks out the EMIF, which is how the AD6M card operates - that board uses the same connectors as the 5-6K Interface board.

For the ADC side of your project, you could look at a few of our multi channel 16-bit ADC EVM's, perhaps the ADS8344 or the ADS8361 - these both have EVMs available and those EVMs will plug onto the 5-6K Interface Board.  The input range on these parts is 0-5V though.  To get you to the +/-10V input range on these devices, you could use the INA159 as the input signal conditioning front end.   The INA159 runs from a single +5V supply and does the necessary gain reduction/level shifting that would be required for these ADC options.

For the DAC side of things, take a look at the DAC8564 or DAC8565.  Both of these devices also have EVMs which would plug into the 5-6K Interface Board as well.  The evaluation boards all come with the necessary components to get you up and running.  If you wanted to order sample chips as well, and have them standing by in case anything gets damaged during debug, you are welcome to do so.

    Regards,

    Tom

    Hi Nicholas,

I am the PME for precision DACs and Tom forwarded this email to me. Apart from the parts Tom mentioned, I will also recommend that you have a look at the DAC8562 - It is the new 16 bit, dual DAC that has a very good integrated reference in a small 3x3 package. From your description, it sounds that this part may be a great fit for the needs of your application.

We do have final samples, EVMs available for this part and it will RTM in June 2011. Shoot me a note in case you need the pre-RTM samples or any support with any of the precision DACs.

    Best,

    Anjana

    Hi Tom and Anjana,

Thanks very much for your assistance and recommendations. Parts are being ordered. I'll post an update when I have more to report.

    Thanks again,

    Nicholas
