tlv5618a Max Load Current

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV5618A

Hi,

I'm a novice so I apologize if the answer is obvious, but....
Can the tlv5618a part safely source a sustained load current of 8mA per channel at Vdd=5V and Vref=3.5V?

The spec sheet says that at room temperature, the tlv5618a (Dip Package) can dissipate a max of 635 mW.  Not that my requirements would be anywhere near it, but does that mean the chip can source roughly 181mA @ Vref of 3.5V?

Thanks!

Steve

  • Stephen,

The power rating you are referring to is the maximum capabilities for the package and process as specified at the various temperatures. These specifications cannot be used to estimate the current source/sink capabilities of the output amplifiers of the DAC.

The best specification for source/sink current available for this device, which is a little on the older side of our devices so it's spec tables are not as complete as a modern device, is the typical characteristics curves on page 7 of the datasheet. Once the source/sink current has reached 2mA the load regulation had drifted by ~100mV depending on if you're sourcing or sinking.

  • Kevin,

    Thanks for your informative response.

I am driving an LDR (Light Dependent Resistor) where I am more concerned about the current being sourced by the DAC than the Vout.  I did run a test and saw that the DAC can source 8mA (on one channel at least) but was not sure the long term effects on the part if that 8mA needed to be sustained.

Given the load regulation drift at 2mA let alone 8mA, I guess a Voltage Follower is in order.

    Thanks again for your help!

    Steve
