7 Segment Display - Driver or a logic to minimize I/Os

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CD74HC4511

Hi All,

Need to build one HMI with lots of 7-segments on it as a Display for one industrial product. There are about 25-30 segments used. Please see the inline image.

There is also a keypad and few more LEDs.

Now how can I optimize the no. of I/O pins of a microcontroller? Which is the best way to drive these 7-Segments "Simultaneously!" ?

Even if I use a BCD-to-7Segment driver such as CD74HC4511, I will require atleast 5 pins per segment. So If I consider 30 segments in total, there will be around 35-40 uController I/Os (after muxing BCD Inputs)!!!! This will simply not work.

Please suggest me the better way out. Good if any reference schematic is posted. Any such IC that can drive more than 1 segment?

  • Hey no replies yet!!!! Did I posted this in the wrong forum?
  • Rahul,

Generally this forum would be for generic Data Converter questions, and products such as ADCs or DACs, most of the people that cover this forum have specific knowledge over those types of parts.

I think it might be better in one of the microcontroller forums (maybe the Low Power Microcontroller Forum or MSP430). Do you have a microcontroller picked out? Are you considering an MSP430 product? Another possibility would be posting it in the Logic Forum, under Interface.

If you need me to, I can move the post there or another similar forum. Just let me know if you need my help doing so by posting back.
