defective DAC8760EMC-EVM

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DAC8760EMC-EVM, DAC8760

I purchased a DAC8760EMC-EVM from Mouser.com (serial number 001 on the silk screen). When +12V is applied to the +15V power connector with the -15V and GND connected to ground, the tantalum capacitors on the power pins get hot and the current draw is 2 amps. The resistance between +12V and ground is 6 ohms in either direction. I know I did not misapply power, as I was very careful about that. Is the board defective or what should I do differently?

Below is the email I received from Mouser.

Hi Richard,

This is a follow up on your return request.

For all defective development tools, you must first contact TI_s E2E forum for tech support at  http://e2e.ti.com/.
If the TI tech determines the part is defective, please return the kit to Mouser along with TI's reference number and/or forum thread with TI tech.
We will then send you a replacement once this process has been completed and it has been confirmed the part is defective.
Please let us know if you have further questions.
We appreciate your business.

Respectfully,

  • Richard,

The initial release of the board had miss-connected tantalum capacitors (tantalum is polarized, one was installed backwards). Egg on my face...

I did recall all of the boards immediately, though, and they should have been replaced. It seems the Mouser stock has a bad EVM.

Two options - this should not have damaged the DAC8760 so if you want to replace the capacitor with one in the correct polarity you should be good to continue with your board. If you'd rather me ship you a new one we can take this to a private message to exchange address information.
  • I would prefer to have the board replaced to ensure I lose no more time in evaluating the the DAC. If you have access to my email I used to sign on, use that.
  • Richard,
