ADC12J4000EVM FTDI Problem

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADC12J4000EVM, ADC12J4000, LMX2581, TRF3765

Hi all,

I am trying to work with the ADC12J4000EVM together with the TSW14J56EVM.

To do that I have followed the steps suggested in the document slau551.pdf pag.11, however while running the ADC12J4000EVM an error related with the FTDI device has appeared, as presented in the Figure below.

Additionally, when I connected the USB cable to the computer all the drivers were correctly installed.

I have restarted the board and the computer, but the problem persists.

Do you have any idea how to solve this problem?

Thank you.

Andre

  • Hi Andre

It sounds like the drivers for the FTDI USB device did not get installed properly. Please disconnect the ADC12J4000EVM USB cable and download and install the FTDI driver for Windows available here: http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/D2XX.htm

Once the drivers are installed the board should be recognized. If you still get the error message you may need to use Windows Device Manager to find the ADC12J4000EVM in the USB device tree, and update the drivers to the newly installed FTDI driver.

Let us know if you still have problems after installing or updating the drivers.

    Best regards,

    Jim B

  • Hi Jim,

I have tried that but the problem persists.
I have also used the FT_PROG software from FTDI to check the product description as described in the user guide, and I concluded that the version is the ADC12J4000_E2. In the user guide says that should be the ADC12J4000_A0. Could this be the problem?

Additionally, to help the debug task I should also refer that the status of the LEDS after powering on the board on is the following (without any RF signal connected to the board):
    - USB_PWR LED- ON (GREEN)
    - TEMP LED - ON (RED)
    - OR LEDS - ON (ORANGE)
    - FMC 12V LED - ON (GREEN)
    Is this normal?

Secondly, I am also using a TSW14J56EVM board, which uses the same FTDI chip, and everything is working fine with that board.

Thank you very much for your help.

    Best Regards,
    Andre
  • Hi Andre

    Thanks for the additional information.

The EVM you have is an earlier revision and the GUI software currently available on the web only works with the more recent A0 EVM.

The earlier revision GUI Installer and User Guide are available in this E2E post:

    https://e2e.ti.com/support/data_converters/high_speed_data_converters/f/68/p/448807/1613566#1613566

That GUI should recognize the board you have and allow proper configuration.

    Best regards,

    Jim B

  • Hi Jim,

    Thank you for your help.
    It is working fine now.

Regarding the firmware of the FTDI chip, is it possible to upgrade it to the A0 version?
What are the differences between them?

    Thank you,
    Regards,
    Andre
  • Hi Andre

The revision change was done to address a different PLL/VCO chip used on the Rev A EVM (TRF3765) versus the earlier revision (LMX2581). The change was made to enable the ADC to be clocked at 4 GHz, the LMX2581 has an upper frequency limit of 3.76 GHz.

Using a different IC required significant differences in the EVM GUI, so a different revision was created.

The FTDI interface is unchanged except for the ID of the board.

    Best regards,

    Jim B

  • Hi Jim,

    Thank you for your answer.
