ADC12J4000EVM: Connection to Xilinx ML623 evaluation board

Part Number: ADC12J4000EVM

Hi,

I need to buy a ADC12J4000EVM. What I have now are only a Xilinx ML623 evaluation board. According to my understanding, it can not be connected to ADC12J4000EVM directly through FMC because the FMC in ML623 and FMC in ADC12J4000EVM are inconformity.

Am I right? If I am right, it there any method to solve this by using some FMC adaptor?

Thanks.

  • Hi Qibing

The ML623 evaluation board does not have any high speed serial pairs routed to the FMC connectors. So that board cannot be used to support the ADC12J4000EVM.

The ADC12J4000EVM can be used with a few different Xilinx boards. The TSW14J10EVM can be used to connect the ADC12J4000EVM and specific Xilinx platforms, and allows the High Speed Data Converter Pro software to configure and control the capture board, and display and analyze the data. Please take a look at the TSW14J10EVM product folder for more details.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Jim,

Thanks for your reply. That's exactly what I am worried about.

Could a FMC module like the below one to solve this problem without the help of  TSW14J10EVM? I can use SMA cable to connect this FMC module and ML623 board to solve the high speed serial signal problem.

I think the TSW14J10EVM is just used to make it easier to the evaluation of ADC board, but it is not necessary. It should be OK just using the FPGA board to do the evaluation, isn't it?

As we have ML623 now, it is better to evaluate the ADC using this board without the requirement to buy a new one.

    Thanks

  • Hi Qibing

That board from hitechglobal has SMA connectors that are routed to the high speed serial signals (DPn_M2C and DPn_C2M) on the FMC connector.

But since the ML623 doesn't have these DPn signals the adapter board won't help.

You need to choose a Xilinx board that does have high speed serial data signals routed to the DPn_M2C and DPn_C2M pins of the FMC connector.

If you don't want to use High Speed Data Converter Pro, or the TI example firmware, then you don't need the TSW14J10EVM. You can just use the standard Xilinx development tools to configure and control the Xilinx board.

  • Hi Jim,

I want to use the Hitechglobal FMC adaptor to connect the FMC on the ADC12J4000EVM board. Then I use SMA cable to connect the high speed signal (DPn_M2C and DPn_C2M) from the FMC adaptor to the ML623 GTX transceiver. Please note, I don not use FMC on the ML623 as you said that it does not have high speed signal input/output. However, ML623 does have 20 GTX routed to SMA connectors. The connection like this:

FMC on the ADC12J4000EVM-------FMC adaptor ------SMA cable------- dedicated GTX tranceiver on the ML623 (not using the FMC on the ML623).

I think the high speed signal channels (DPn_M2C and DPn_C2M) can be connected between ML623 and ADC12J4000EVM using this method.

This method do make sense for me. Is it right?

    Thanks
  • Hi Qibing

Unfortunately that Hitechglobal board is designed as an FMC module or mezzanine card. It is designed to connect to the carrier board FMC connector, not another mezzanine card FMC connector.

You need something that can connect to a mezzanine card and break out to SMA connectors. Or you need an adapter or cable that can connect 2 mezzanine cards together (which probably doesn't exist since there is no purpose to connect to mezzanine cards together).

    Best regards,

    Jim B

  • Hi Jim,

Thanks for your explanation. It makes sense for me now.

We still have a Xilinx development board - Xilinx Virtex™ 6 HXT 40G/100G Development Platform. Can it be used to evaluate the ADC12J4000EVM?

    www.hitechglobal.com/.../Virtex6_HXT_100GIG.htm

However, I'm not sure if this development board can work or not because no one used it in the last several years.

Therefore, please advise me if xilinx vc707 development kit is useful? Just in case that I need to buy a new FPGA board.

    Thanks
  • Qibing,

We have tested the ADC12J4000EVM with the VC707 and provide example firmware for this on the TI website. We have never tested anything with the Virtex6_HXT_100GIG board. If this board has serdes rated up to 10GHz, an available JESD204B IP Core, and the signals routed on the FMC connector required by the ADC12J4000EVM, this board should work, but you would have to create your own firmware as we have never used this platform.

  • Hi Jim,

    Thanks. It's really helpful.
