ADC32RF45EVM: ADC32RF45EVM Setup

Part Number: ADC32RF45EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMK04828, ADC32RF80

Hello,

I am trying to setup the ADC32RF45EVM for Dual-Band, decimate-by-8, 4841 mode. I am using the board's internal clock (LMK04828 -- C409,410 are removed and C431,432 are installed.

I setup the ADC32RF45EVM following the instructions in SLAU620D.pdf section 5 (with changes to sample clock rates: 2456.7MHz, setting JP3 to Internal, selecting the LMX, I set DDC mode, dual-band, complex,  etc. -- see screenshot  / and then issue a reset to the LMK as well as the pushbutton reset on the board ). I program the EVM and see that the D4 LED (PLL2 Locked) goes ON.

I then run HSDCpro and select the ADC32RF80_LMF_4841 file and load it, the "Downloading Firmware" window pops up for a very short time (2-3 sec) and then says OK. When I try to reset the board, I a WRITE_REGISTER_FAILED message. I am attaching the screenshots below.

  • Hi,

the screenshot did not come through.  When you say 'try to reset the board' and see the 'WRITE_REGISTER_FAILED', is that resetting the TSW14J56 or the ADC EVM?   From my reading of it, It seems like the ADC GUI portion earlier worked ok.  You don't normally need another reset after programming the EVM and then downloading firmware into the FPGA.   I'm not sure where you are seeing the error.

  • Richard,

I am adding the screenshots again, and yes the ADC config worked OK. It was trying to collect data with HSDC Pro that is the trouble. The reset I was referring to is for the TSW14J56 and is described in step 8 of section 5.3 in SLAU620D. I also got the same WRITE_REGISTER_FAILED message when I clicked the [Capture] button in HSDC Pro.

  • Hi,

The firmware did not load into the FPGA.  In the lower right corner of the HSDCPro GUI for Firmware Type: it is blank.   Also, in the lower left corner for firmware revision it is all 'ones' read back from the FPGA.    Normally there should be the name of the firmware that supports the chosen device showing up in the lower right corner.   Check to see that your power supply to the TSW14J56 has at least a 3A capacity.   If the current capacity of the supply is too low then after pushing the firmware the FPGA will draw too much current for the supply and the supply will droop enough to loose its firmware.  The ADC EVM also would need about a 3A supply, so consider that also if using the same bench supply for both boards.    If you are sure that there is enough current capacity for the supply to the TSW14J56 then check the bank of 8 LEDs against what is in the User Guide for the TSW14J56 - that LEDs D3 and D8 are lit and the others off as in this picture.

  • Richard:

It was a combination of things:

I changed to a higher current (6A) PS (the original was 3A and I was using to power both the ADC & FPGA boards) and adjusted the output level to compensate for the cable I-R drop. But still did not work (FPGA FW not loading). I then changed to another TSW14J56 board which and go the same result.

The last item turned out to be the USB3.0 ifc on the FPGA board does not seem to be compatible with my USB2.0 hub. I removed the hub, plugged the FPGA board directly into the laptop (putting the hub + ADCEVB onto another USB port) and it works: I can program the FPGA and collect data from the ADC.

    Thanks for your help!

    /John

  • Great.   thanks for letting us know.
