SNR in dB and dBc

Hi,

Some ADC datasheets provide SNR in dBc, while some in dB. what's the difference between them? Can we convert dBc to dBFS? if we can, how?

  • Ms Han -

Since dB is a relative value, it needs to be referenced to something.

dBFS = dB calculation referenced to a full-scale signal
dBc = dB calculation referenced to the carrier signal (fundamental signal usually).  The carrier fundamental is usually less than the full-scale value in this case.

You can convert between the two if you know that absolute value of carrier magnitude.  For dBFS, you should be able to find the maximum full-scale signal in datasheets.  If you know the absolute magnitude of the carrier, you can convert dBc to dBFS by adding the difference between the carrier magnitude and full-scale magnitude.
