Can ADS1248`s SPI drive the optocoupler

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1248

Hi Team,

My customer Zhuzhou are using our ADS1248, they need to use optocoupler to isolate the 1248, but from the datasheet we don`t how much current can ADC1248`s SPI give out, the min current of the optocoupler is 7mA, Can ADS1248 drive the optocoupler?

Thanks!

Regards, Sunny

  • Sunny,

The ADS1248 was designed to be connected to a CMOS device and the typical load is tested at 1mA (as seen in the Electrical Characteristics of the datasheet).  Unfortunately, I would not recommend directly connecting to an optocoupler because it is not tested with a high load at final test.  The device should be able to sink/source 10mA and more, but the output VOH and VOL will change with the increased current.  Additionally this will vary over temperature and the supply voltage used.
