ADS1118 Safety on the SPI

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1118

HI, my customer ask for the following questions..

We now have two additional questions concerning this ADC:

1 : Concerning the SPI Data Output, can it safely handle a current draw of 35mA for a duration of 25nS?

2 : In general, can the SPI Data Output be safely used to drive a Mosfet, in particular OnSemi P/N 2N7002?

REGARDS,

kamal

  • Kamal,

I don't know if the ADS1118 digital output can source 35mA. I would guess that the digital cell connected to that pin is not able to drive that amount even for a short amount of time. I don't think it would be destructive, but it certainly would not drive a high level. We test the operation to only 1mA to the levels given in the Electrical Characteristics in the datasheet.

For driving the MOSFET, I think it may work, but it depends on what you are trying to do. If the output goes only to 5V, it will certainly turn on the MOSFET, but it may not enhance the channel enough (by looking at the On-Region Characteristics).
