ADS7950 Configuration failure similar to https://e2e.ti.com/support/data_converters/precision_data_converters/f/73/t/150842

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS7950

I have 3 ADS7950 parts out of ~4k that lose configuration similar to the issue referenced above. The PCBA design & software driver has been working reliably for about 7 years. A recent build has resulted in 3 boards with parts that will not retain configuration using the normal driver to setup auto1 mode. The 3 parts fail 95% of the time.

I can modify the sequence of configuration and get the part to work similar to the previous 2011 discussion however I believe that is not the root issue. I replaced the failing part with a new one and all the original driver code and new converter worked correctly.

I placed the failing part on another board and the loss of configuration problem reoccurred. There is definitely something wrong with the part.

Questions:

1) Are there any known issues with the ADS7950 that pertain to my issue?

2) Are there any known sensitivities to an ESD event that could affect the initial configuration write cycle?

3) What was TI's official response to the original question in 2011?

Thanks,

Peter

  • Peter,

I apologize for this delay in responding.

From your description it is clear that the problem moves with the device. However, what is not very clear is whether is it just the Mode Control Register that is losing configuration or if all registers that are getting reset, indicating a possible problem with the power supplies.

The last time we had encountered seen such a failure and retrieved the bad parts from the customer, we were unable to see any failures in almost 3 weeks of continuous testing on our setup.

I am going to need some design details from you in order to debug this. I will connect with you directly so that we can discuss this offline.

    Thanks.

    Regards,
