Does anyone know if the MSP430AFE uC is supported by the latest version of CCS?

I could not connect with the AFE series with CCS v5.1.0, and am waiting for the fix in the software.

    Thanks!

      Hi,

I can confirm that in the latest versions support the AFE family.  Ie 5.1.1 as well as the 5.2 betas.

      I hope this helps.

      Best Regards,
      Lisa

      Hi Lisa,

      Thanks for the input.

Another thing, I went to CCS Help > Check for Updates > and updated my v5.1.0

      Afterward, Help > About CCS > v5.1.0.09000

Is this the latest version, and will this version connect to the AFE device ?

      Hi,

I would strongly recommend using the latest version, 5.1.1 but that version should support the AFE devices as well.  Have you tried creating a project for one of those devices?

      Best regards,

      Lisa

      Hi again,

I realised I am not sure what OS you are using.  If you are using Linux, the MSP is only supported using the USB FET at the moment.

      Best regards,

      Lisa

      Hi Lisa,

      OS = XP

I am surprised the 5.1.0 did not upgrade to 5.1.1.

What do I need to do to get 5.1.1? (I need the 32-bit variables to efficiently handle the 24-bit SD24 on the AFE)

Yes, I made a workspace, and I could not connect with the AFE device, but could with other MSP's, so my USB FET is updated successfully.  I could not un-update the FET, but I have two, so I use one for the v4.x and one for v5.x.

      Thanks for your help!

      Hi,

let me see if I can dig into this.  What version compiler are you using?   You can find this under Window->Preferences->Code Composer Studio->Build->Code Generation Tools.

Due to an issue the upgrade path was at least temporarily taken offline.  You can try 5.1.1 from here:

      http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Download_CCS

Do you get an error?  Do you get any error logs?   Can you expand a bit on your experience regarding not being able to connect to AFE devices?

      Best Regards,

      Lisa

      Hi Lisa,

      Thanks for your kind help

Here is the info you requested.

I attempted to update again, message is "no updates available".

I have a lot to do, and can not devote time to solving this problem at the moment.

I need advice on how to move forward.  It is clear that the 5.1.0 has a problem updating to a newer version.  This tells me to wait for the v5.2.  Would you advise removing v5.1 and installing v5.2 when it is ready for the public?  Is there an estimated release date for v5.2?

I am continuing to use v4.2.4.0003 because it is working with the AFE device.

FYI 1) after updating the FET to v5.1, it no-longer works with v4.2 after reversing the update.  I have an older FET that I am using with v4.2 for now.

FYI 2) I note that the v4.2 states as "Licensed" at the top of the program in the blue area.  Should the v5.1 show that it is also licensed in this area, currently my program does not show this, may be a problem or not?

      .

      Hello,

yes this could certainly be caused by licensing.   What do you see under Help->Code Composer Studio Licensing Information  ?

What type of license do you have?

      Best Regards,

      Lisa

Ha, always have to move stuff around!

      Status: Licensed

      License Type: Full License

This does not seem to be the problem, so back to the question, remove V5.1.0 and replace with 5.2 if and when it comes out?

Is my assumption is that the license file will be the same if I preform the above type fix (I do not need to get a new license)?

      Hi Lisa,

I did not know what I was getting into when going from v4 to v5.

To reiterate, because this conversation it getting a bit long:

      1. I am going to wait for a tested fix (as opposed to a patch) for the issues regarding connection to the AFE family of MSP's.

      2. I feel it best, from the information I have at this point, to wait for CCS v5.2.

      3. Because my CCS v5.0 has not updated to v5.1, I can not be confident that when v5.2 comes out, the standard method to update CCS will result in an update from v5.0 to v5.2. Thus, I need to know how to resolve this problem?

        a) I proposed to remove CCS v5.0 from my XP-OS-PC, and install the v5.2 when it comes out. To restate, does CCS v5.0 have an issue with updating to the latest version of CCS 5.x, and to resolve this issue I need to remove v5.0?

        b) Or, do you have a proposed method to get my CCS to update to v5.1?

      4. Is there a projected release date for CCS v5.2 for W-XP PCs?

      Thanks for your patient responses,

      MAC (Mechanical and Control Engineering)

      Hi,

ok, if you wish to wait for 5.2, then that is also a good option.  There are 5.2 betas already available.

The 5.0.x family did not support the MSP and was a special release for initial Linux support.  There is no upgrade path from this to 5.1.x

The most up to date released version is 5.1.1.

      I hope this helps clarify.

      Best Regards,

      Lisa

      Gee, I"M USING WINDOWS-XP

FOR ANY OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS, IF YOU DO NOT KNOW, THEN PLEASE SAY SO

I am running 5.0 on a Windows-XP machine, as you see in the screen capture in the former correspondence.

1.1) Should this be functioning at all?

2.1) Please do tell me, it sounds as though I have to use Add/Remove and get rid of the program 5.0 program, and then install 5.2?

3.1) When is the estimated time 5.2 for WINDOWS-XP due to be released?

4.1) Will my current 3.0 license file work for 5.2?

5.1) Does this explain why my FET no longer works with 4.2? Will I have to use "Lite FET-Pro430" program to get the FET back to working again?

      Hello,

      Please see the answers

1.1) Should this be functioning at all?

If you are running 5.0.x, then no.  As I mentioned 5.0.x did not officially support the MSP430.

2.1) Please do tell me, it sounds as though I have to use Add/Remove and get rid of the program 5.0 program, and then install 5.2?

You can have multiple CCS installations.  Simply use a different directory.

3.1) When is the estimated time 5.2 for WINDOWS-XP due to be released?

I can not give any guarantees, but hopefully sometime in the June timeframe a released version of 5.2 will be available.

4.1) Will my current 3.0 license file work for 5.2?

No, CCSv5 requires a v5 license.  Please see the below wiki.  If you have an active subscription, you can go use the steps below to upgrade your license.

      http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Licensing_-_CCS

      • Go to www.ti.com/myregisteredsoftware
      • Find your row for TMDSCCS-ALLF03-v4.0
      • Click MANAGE and then click UPGRADE – GET NEW LICENSE
      • Click E-mail license - you will receive two (2) emails: Instructions and License File with attachment (.lic)
      • You MUST follow these instructions to save this new License File (.lic) before you can use your upgraded version 5.1

5.1) Does this explain why my FET no longer works with 4.2? Will I have to use "Lite FET-Pro430" program to get the FET back to working again?

Yes, an incorrect license will not allow you to debug.   However with the MSP430 you should be aware of the information in the below wiki.  CCSv4 only works with a downgraded, dll v2 loaded FET, and CCSv5 only works with a dll v3 loaded FET.

      http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/MSP_Debug_Stack

      Hope this helps.

      Best REgards,
      LIsa
