CCS/EK-TM4C123GXL: Error importing project. Reason: CCS server not responding.

Part Number: EK-TM4C123GXL

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

OS: Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit, service pack 1

Code Composer Studio Version: 7.4.0.00015

Failure description: Cannot import TI example code to IDE after installing the local copy. Message says "Error importing project. Reason: CCS server not responding."

Steps to recreate:

  1. Install CCS 7.4
  2. Open Resource Explorer: View > Resource Explorer
  3. Filter code by board (in my case, EK-TM4C123GXL)
  4. Select any code example (in my case, Software > TI-RTOS for TivaC - v:2.16.00.08 >Development Tools >  EK-TM4C123GXL > Driver Examples > SPI Examples > SPI Loopback)
  5. Install selected example project using the download to local button.
  6. Install dependencies for board when prompted, (in this case XDC tools. Versions 3.50.4.43, 3.32.2.25, and 3.32.0.06 are all installed according to CCS preferences)
  7. In the Resource Explorer, select the "Import to IDE" button.
  8. An error message appears, reading: "Error importing project. Reason: CCS server not responding."

Notes: Also tried running CCS as admin after installation. Importing still does not work

  • Hi Royce,
That example seems to import fine for me. I followed your steps and it worked.

For step 6, I was prompted to just install 3.32.0.06.

There should have been a step between #6 & #7 where after the download and installation of the components, CCS should have detected the new installations and prompted you if you wish to "install" it to CCS. Agreeing to this would require a CCS restart. Did this step happen for you too?

    Thanks
    ki

Yes, I got that prompt and restarted CCS. Is there a way to get you more data about the failure?

    See attached file.

    Best regards

And, please let me know if there is any further information I can provide

  • In reply to Royce Stubbs:

I see the exception where the socket closes but I'm not sure why this is. I tried deleting the local files and installing again. I get success messages regarding syncing with the CCS server, but I get the same error every time when I attempt to import. I also tried to manually import the project into the IDE, but I get a different error which can be seen at the very bottom of the log: "Device is either 'null' or is currently not recognized by CCS". The message advises to check for updates, but no updates are available.

  • In reply to Ki-Soo Lee:

Uninstalling CCS, deleting the c:/ti directory and re-installing CCS does not fix the problem.

  • In reply to Royce Stubbs:

    Hello Royce,

Sorry for the delay. I took a look at your attached log and found the following error:

!MESSAGE Device is either 'null' or is currently not recognized by CCS. See 'Help > Check for Updates' or visit CCS App Center to get the latest device support.

Do you have Tiva device support installed? It would be the "TM4C12x ARM Cortex-M4F core-based MCUs" option when installing CCS"

You can check your existing installation by checking if you can create a new project for a TM4C12x device.

    Thanks

  • In reply to Ki-Soo Lee:

    Ki,

Thanks for the response. I did install the support for this device during installation. I am able to create a CCS project for TM4C12X targets, although it might be worth mentioning that when I type the target name as it appears on the packaging (TM4C123GXL) it does not come up. There are other variants that show up, in particular, TM4C123GE* and TM4C123GH*.

    Best regards

  • In reply to Ki-Soo Lee:

Are there any other work-arounds to import this project without the use of the CCS server? Are there any other checks I can run to confirm my installation is working properly? I installed everything to their default locations, and installed all dependency items, but between the 'device null' error and the 'CCS server not responding' errors, I have run out of ideas. I cannot continue until I get this resolved.

    Best regards,

    Royce
