CCSv6 Hangs during install

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CCSTUDIO, SYSBIOS

I’m trying to install CCS v6.1 on my computer and this process will not run to completion.  I’ve tried many times with no success. I’ve tried installing different versions of the application (6.0 and 6.1). I’ve also tried the direct web download installer as well as the stand-alone offline installer. I’ve tried running the program as admin and I’ve always made sure the virus scan is turned off. I’ve tried deleting the directory and starting over.

All attempts have ended in the same result: The install will run fine for a while going through various steps of the installation but will ultimately hang on the message “Registering new target content products”. The process will not get past this no matter how many hours I let it grind, even overnight. When I press cancel, the installer will not close. I have to kill it using the task manager. I also have to kill the eclipse executable that it starts up using the task manager. The log file seems to indicate that there may be some problem with the eclipse executable being hung.

I’ve seen a couple strings on the forum describing this condition but they do not have any usable remedies.

I’ve included the text of the installation log window and a screen shot as well. Also, I’ve attached a zip file of the install log files.

Please advise on what I need to do to fix this. Thanks.

 Scott C.

Registering new target content products

7536.install_logs.zip

  • I'm not sure what is causing the hang, but there are some items to investigate.

At the point where the install hangs, a call is being made to CCS to find all target content products (like TI-RTOS, SYSBIOS, etc). A cache of known devices is also being built. The installation is pretty much complete except for minor items.

Since the install is almost complete, it would be useful to know whether CCS will start. If you kill the installer when it hangs, and then browse to the \ti\ccsv6\eclipse folder and start ccstudio.exe, does it start?

The install might be stuck looking on installing support for a target content product it does not understand. By default, it will look in the following folders: the installation folder, the c:\ti folder, and the c:\program files\texas instruments folder. If you are installing to c:\ti and it looks like you have been deleting the content of that folder after each retry, then anything in the c:\ti folder is probably OK. Is there anything in the c:\program files\texas instruments folder? As your PC is 64-bit, check both the program files and program files (X86) folders.

Another possibility is there is some corruption in the cache folder that causes a hang, although I have never seen this happen. You can clean out the cache folder manually by going to "%APPDATA%\..\local\Texas Instruments" and renaning the folder to a temporary name.

  • Investigation #1:

When I manually start the ccstudio.exe file, the program opens but immediately shows a popup window stating that multiple errors have occured. These are the errors:

An internal error occurred during: "CrashTrackerJob".
    com/ti/utility/filesystem/DirectoryService

An internal error occurred during: "Loading device information".
    com/ti/debug/engine/xpcom/Runtime

An internal error occurred during: "Pre-fetch Breakpoint xml files".
    com/ti/debug/engine/framework/IDisposable$DisposedObjectAccessException

An internal error occurred during: "Searching for new products".
    com/ti/utility/filesystem/DirectoryService

Pressing 'OK' clears the dialog box. As I try to do things in the program, some functions work and others bring up error messages. Finally, when I try to close the program I get another error message:

An error has occurred. See error log for more details.
    com/ti/xpcom/XPCOMException

I cannot close the program because of this message so I have to kill it with the task manager.

    Investigation #2

The 'texas instruments' folder does not exist in either 'program files' or 'program files (x86)'.

  • Thank you. From #1, something is wrong with the install that probably doesn't have anything to do with the target content discovery.

What I suggest is to start with an install with less options until we can figure out what is wrong. Could you re-run the install into a completely different folder, say C:\ti2, and this time select only the MSP430 Ultra low power mcu option. If you exand the first node in the processor support selection pane, it is the first sub-node.  Do not select MSP432 or any other options.  This will limit the install to a  small set of components.  If it doesn't work, please post the install logs folder here. If this version works, the installer can be re-run into the same folder with additional components selected.

  • I did as you suggested. In addition I purged all of my files  including the downloaded install file, the c:\ti directory and the temporary files in the cache and rebooted the machine. I redownloaded the offline installer and used that for the experiment. I tried installing just the MSP430 elements of package and it hung again at the "Registering new target content products" step in the install. Next, just to be sure, I purged the files again and rebooted. This time I tried installing just the C6000 single core DSP elements of the package...Same result. It hung at the registering new target content products. I've attached the install log file for reference, though I think it indicates the same thing as before. According to the log, the process hangs when the installer calls the eclipsec.exe file.

    2022.ccs_setup_6.1.0.00104_install.log

  • Thanks for trying that. We're running out of ideas. If the file is still there, could you provide this:  C:\Users\scornelsen\AppData\Local\Temp\ccs_2e1cb9cf-b4bf-47bf-7d8a-6e5273a8e46d\workspace\.metadata\.log

If there is nothing useful in the log, would you be open to attending a remote debug session where you share your desktop and we can investigate in real-time? If so, please send a email to the address in my profile information and we can set up a time.  Thank you.

  • I checked the folder you suggested. I was able to navigate as far as C:\Users\scornelsen\AppData\Local\Temp\ccs_2e1cb9cf-b4bf-47bf-7d8a-6e5273a8e46d but then the remainder of the folder structure did not exist. There are two files in this folder: unistall_ccs.dat and unistbr.000. The .dat file is empty and the .000 file is about 1MB. The forum won't let me post this file type but I can email it to you if it is interesting at all.

In another vein, I thought I'd try starting the ccstudio.exe manually again to see what would happen. I've made no changes since my last experiment of installing only the content I needed for the C6000 single core DSPs. This differs from the last time I was manually starting the program when I was intalling the full support for all devices. Interestingly, the program started up without the errors that I reported previously. Also, it shut down without errors. The program still does not show up in my "Start" menu but at least it is basically functioning if I navigate to the executable. I will need support for other devices besides the DSPs but maybe we're getting somewhere. Any suggestions on next steps from here?

I'm open to the idea of a remote debugging session if you still feel that is the best approach. If so, I'll email you.

  • I'm happy to continue debugging in this thread or via webex - whichever you prefer.

Glad to hear the C6 only install seems to mostly work. I think the installer adds the shortcuts after the point where it hung, so you would be missing those.

What we could do next is run the hanging command directly from a windows command prompt:

    "c:\ti\ccsv6\eclipse\eclipsec.exe" -application com.ti.common.core.initialize -data "C:\Users\scornelsen\AppData\Local\Temp\ccs_2e1cb9cf-b4bf-47bf-7d8a-6e5273a8e46d\workspace" -ccs.profileTag "Installed Code Composer Studio 6.1.0.00104." -nosplash

The -data path is just a temporary storage location so you can use a different path if you wish.

Does this still hang?  If so, what we could do next is download the Microsoft process monitor tool from here.  Start up the tool and add a filter to include eclipsec.exe:

Then, run the eclipsec command line again again to capture the process activity.  It helps if there is little else running on your PC as the log captures a lot of data. Shut down other programs where possible before trying this. The eclipsec process will run much slower than usual as well.  After the eclipsec process has been hung for a while (at least a few minutes), kill it off. In the process monitor tool, save the generated log to a file, zip it up, and post it here. It might be fairly large. If it is too large, I can provide an ftp site by email.

The idea here is to capture what files the process is reading from disk to see if that provides a clue as to what is confusing it.

  • Ok, I ran through the process as you described. Note that the syntax for the command line did not work as given. I had to remove the quotation mark after eclipsec.exe and then it ran fine. This is the command I used:

    c:\ti\ccsv6\eclipse\eclipsec.exe -application com.ti.common.core.initialize -data "C:\Users\scornelsen\AppData\Local\Temp\ccs_2e1cb9cf-b4bf-47bf-7d8a-6e5273a8e46d\workspace" -ccs.profileTag "Installed Code Composer Studio 6.1.0.00104." -nosplash

The process monitor picked up around 11k operations within a second or two of initiating the command. It then hung and ran a single operation (Thread Create) every 30 seconds for a few minutes. I then killed the cmd window and a hundred or so operations ran to close things out. The zip file containing the logs is attached. I did not know your preferred format so I've included all three formats in the zip but the data is identical.

Also, there is now a .log file in the temp directory mentioned before so I've included that as well.

  • Sorry about the cut/paste error in the command line. There was supposed to be a leading quote. The path has no spaces so it doesn't really need to be quoted.

The log is interesting. It looks like the JVM never starts. I can see the initial JVM DLLs being loaded, but then none of the .jar files are loaded. Near the start of the log, there are a lot of registry accesses to keys related to group software restriction policies. I'm wondering if there is a group policy set on your PC that interferes with the process startup somehow. I'm not very familiar with how these Microsoft policies work, so this is just a guess. I'm also not sure why running ccstudio.exe work work but running eclipsec.exe wouldn't as they do the almost exactly the same thing.

Depending on how the policies are configured, CCS might behave differently if run as an administrator. Could you open a new command window but use the run as administrator option (on Win 8.1, I believe you will see that option at the bottom of the screen when you search for "cmd" and right click on the found cmd window icon). In the administrator command prompt, run the same command again. Does it still hang? Assuming you actually have software restriction policies configured, do you have any way of temporarily relaxing them to see if this makes any difference?

  • I ran the cmd prompt as administrator with the same results. I've attached the process monitor logs for reference. I also looked at the group policies on my computer. Like you, I'm not highly familiar with how these work, but I've looked through all of the settings and they all appear to be in the state of 'not configured' which I take to me that they are not enabled. Out of the many hundreds of settings, I did not find any that were configured.

I have been wondering about other possible sources of conflicts on my computer. I may be grasping at straws, but I have some other programs installed that I believe also have an Eclipse-based engine built into the software package: Altera Quartus II - Versions 13, 14, 14.1, and 15 and Altium Designer - Version 15.  As I understand it, the Eclipse core that each is using lives within the individual program files for each and should be independent of one another. But that said, is there any kind of system variable that could be common to these difference instances of Eclipse that has been set by one of my other programs and is interfering with this install? Along with this theory, I should note that I had all of these (Altera Quartus and Altium Designer) installed with CCSv5 on my old Windows 7 machine without any difficulties.

  • It is a mystery to me what is causing the process to hang.

Eclipse-based applications should be able to coexist as you say. I don't see any evidence of "cross-talk" between applications based on the files being loaded and registry keys being accessed.  The eclipsec process has not even started running any of the java code when it hangs.

In an effort to find some clues, here are some ideas for logs to collect that might shed some light. I don't know which, if any, will help though.

    - Generate the same process monitor log for the same command line but with "eclipsec.exe" replaced by "ccstudio.exe". ccstudio will run unattached to the console window so the command prompt will return immediately even though the process is running in the background.  The filter in the process monitor tool will need to be adjusted to include ccstudio.exe

-run the same hanging command line as above, but this time generate a minidump file from the hung process. A minidump file will provide info on the status of all the process threads and loaded modules. This can be generated by downloading and starting "process explorer", selecting eclipsec.exe from the tree, from the right click meny: create dump -> create minidump

-does starting eclipsec without any parameters hang?  If it doesn't hang, eclipse should start up with its default branding and perspective visible.

  • Investigation #1:

These are the Log files for running ccstudio.exe instead of eclipsec.exe. I ran the command then let it sit for a few minutes then used the task manager to shut down the background process so entries in the log file reflect all three of these steps.

    ProcessMonitor3.zip

    Investigation #2:

I cannot get the ProcessExplorer to run. Upon execution it gives an error message "Unable to extract 64-image. Run Process explorer from a writeable directory." I have explored this problem through the forums on sysinternals.com. The problem has been seen by others with only partial success in resolving it. I attempted several suggested fixes but they were not successful so in order avoid going down yet another rabbit hole, I've decided to leave that alone for now.

    Investigation #3:

Ran this command to load eclipsec.exe without parameters:

    c:\ti\ccsv6\eclipse\eclipsec.exe

This successfully loads the default Eclipse environment but there is a message in the command dialog stating

    dvtLogOptions.xml DOES NOT exists

Upon closing the application (the normal way, not through the Task Manager) then a couple more lines come across the command line before returning the prompt:

    loading library: C:\ti\ccsv6\ccs_base\DebugServer\..\common\bin\xerces-c_2_5_0.dll

    loaded library successfully! C:\ti\ccsv6\ccs_base\DebugServer\..\common\bin\xerces-c_2_5_0.dll

  • Thank you.

Re #1: I was hoping a difference between the sequence seen in the ccstudio log and the eclipsec log would point to something for further investigation. The two end up being very different because the Windows prefetch caching feature kicks in and changes the order in which things happen. I guess prefetch can be turned off, but as this avenue may not go anywhere I'll put this on hold.

Re #2: Agree it's not worth wasting time trying to get that working. I guess there is some possibility the reason process monitor doesn't work is somehow related to eclipsec not working but it seems a long shot.

re #3: This is interesting. The command line output you noticed can be ignored as it is "normal". Eclipsec does start when there are no parameters though. So the command line parameters are changing what the process does at start up. It seems worth trying a short experiment related to the command line parameters. Could you run these command lines and tell me whether they hang?  The actual output in the console doesn't matter. The "listInstalledRoots" application just prints a list of installed features. I'm more interested in whether other applications run or whether it is only the initialize application that hangs. The other variations are just trying to figure out if a specific parameter causes a problem.

    c:\ti\ccsv6\eclipse\eclipsec.exe -application com.ti.common.core.initialize -data "C:\Users\scornelsen\AppData\Local\Temp\ccs_2e1cb9cf-b4bf-47bf-7d8a-6e5273a8e46d\workspace" -ccs.profileTag "Installed Code Composer Studio 6.1.0.00104."

    c:\ti\ccsv6\eclipse\eclipsec.exe -application com.ti.common.core.initialize -data "C:\Users\scornelsen\AppData\Local\Temp\ccs_2e1cb9cf-b4bf-47bf-7d8a-6e5273a8e46d\workspace"

    c:\ti\ccsv6\eclipse\eclipsec.exe -application com.ti.common.core.initialize -data %TEMP%\tmpws

    c:\ti\ccsv6\eclipse\eclipsec.exe -application org.eclipse.equinox.p2.director -listInstalledRoots -nosplash

    c:\ti\ccsv6\eclipse\eclipsec.exe -application org.eclipse.equinox.p2.director -listInstalledRoots

  • The first command brings up a splash screen for Eclipse Luna and hangs at that point. I left the splash screen up for a couple minutes and then killed it with the task manager.

The second command does the same as the first.

The third command does the same as the first.

The fourth command runs and appears to complete. After displaying many lines of data it prints "Operation completed in 397 ms." and then returns me to a command prompt.

The fifth command brings up a splash screen very briefly which then dissappears. The same sort of data is displayed to the command window followed by the "Operation completed in 413 ms" and then returns me to a command prompt.

  • It seems that an operation which initializes native (non-java) components of CCS might cause the hang. Operations that only use Java do not seem to cause a problem.

Something I saw in another thread suggests a possible cause. In that case, one of their Microsoft redistributable library installs was corrupted. CCS wouldn't start at all but the error messages were similar.  It is a simple thing to re-run these installers, so it is worth giving it a try.

Could you download these two executables and run them to completion accepting any questions in the install wizard? If the 2nd one asks to do a repair, please select that option.  After running these installer, please re-run the hanging command line above. Did this make any difference?

It's really the 2nd one that matters. If re-running it makes not difference, it would also be worth running it a 2nd time, doing an uninstall, and then re-running again to reinstall the package.

     http://software-dl.ti.com/ccs/non-esd/test/vcredist_x86_2012_11.0.61030.exe

  • I ran everything as you suggested. The hanging command line still hangs. I uninstalled and reinstalled the 2nd package and it still hangs.

  • I'm pretty much out of ideas. If you would like to pursue this, I think a remote debug session would be the next step. I will ask a couple of other developers to attend as well. Please let me know.
  • Here is some further information on this failure for future reference.

After working through possibilities with sscornel for quite some time offline, sscornel  found that a set of Windows group policy restrictions designed to prevent CryptoLocker malware attacks were affecting the CCS install. A workaround was to put the computer on a temporary domain with default group security policies to allow the install to complete.

We are looking further into what triggers the policy restriction during the CCS install and how to prevent it.

Many thanks to sscornel for helping track this down!

  • Sir I have also the same problem of ccs installation,,,can you please provide solutions to this,,as I m new to this

  • Hello,

I'm trying to install CCS v6.1.3 on a Windows 7 64-bit machine and make it works and it seems I have the exact same symptoms: setup hangs at same point, same errors at startup, no Start menu shortcuts). The only difference, I may have read wrong, but when it hangs, the setup pops-up a little error window of Eclipsec saying to see  <user>/AppData/Local/Temp/ccs-*/workspace/.metadata/.log (see attached screenshot and mentionned log).

Also, I nearly have the same configuration with several eclipse or eclipse-based programs installed. Several versions of Ms Visual C++ Redistributable 2005 and 2012, both x64 and x86. Also have Ms redistributable runtime DLLs VS2005 installed from some program.

Does this issue has any conclusion since 2015 July?

  • Hi,

Can you please zip up the contents of the installdir's install_logs* folders and post them here?

    Thanks

    Danish

  • Thanks for your help, you can find the install_logs.zip attached.6082.install_logs.zip

  • I failed to reinstall CCS6.1.3.00033_win32 after I had unintalled all my Visual C++ redistributable 32-bit.

However, I uninstall failed v6.1.3 installation and I succeeded to install an older version CCS6.0.1.00040_win32. So the problem is specific to v6.1.3 and my configuration. (EDIT)My colleague succeeded to install v6.1.3 on another machine.

    (EDIT)
Info on my PC configuration that might be useful:

Eclipse 4.4.2 luna win32-x86_64 is installed.

Both 32-bit and 64-bit Java 1.8 are installed.

  • Hi Mathieu,

The developers say your problem stems from the MSVC redistributables being missing or not fully installed. You mentioned that you uninstalled all your 32 bit redistributables, but from the logs, the installer thinks they're still installed. Please let me know if I misunderstood the steps you took:

    • Uninstall all MSVC 32 redistributables
    • Install CCS 6.1.3.

Could you try to manually install the redistributables. You can download them from here:

    software-dl.ti.com/.../vcredist_x86_2005_6.0.2900.2180.exe

    software-dl.ti.com/.../vcredist_x86_2008_9.0.30729.17.exe

    software-dl.ti.com/.../vcredist_x86_2012_11.0.61030.exe

    software-dl.ti.com/.../vcredist_x86_2015_14.0.23506.exe

Please make sure you uninstall each of them first, and look for any error messages that pop up.

    Thanks,

    Danish

  • Hi Danish,

My first try digging MSVC redistributable issue was to follow an old post indicating to uninstall and reinstall MSVC redistibutables 32-bit 2005 and 2012. This what I've done, but I didn't uninstalled their 64-bit variant that were also installed. However, the setup failed and I see now why because the setup also has dependencies on 2008 and 2015.

My second try was to uninstalled all my MSVC 32 bit redistributables, but not their 64 bit variant and try to run the setup again assuming it will install the MSVC redistibutables 32-bit it needs by itself, but it failed again.

Then my IT technician came back saying that he was able to sucessfully run the setup on another PC, so the problem was surely my specific PC configuration and installed sofware, but I cannot confirm anything about MSVC. I changed my PC...

  • Hi,

Can you please zip up the contents of the install_logs folders and post them here. Also please do the following:

    Run the command:

    WMIC QFE|find "KB2999226"

    what do you see?

    Thanks

    Danish

  • Hello,
Running that command did nothing, no answer.
Where are the logs? And how can I post files here?
  • Hi,

That means that you don't have all the necessary windows updates. Can you please run the updates and try the install again?

    Thanks

    Danish

  • where it is locate ?

  • Hello,

I am experiencing a similar issue with Windows 7 Professional on multiple computers. The install window repeatedly hangs at the same location, which displays "Unzipping" but the install_log shows that the error is actually in running Eclipse (see attached).

What updates are necessary for the CCS v6.1 install? My Windows shows that its up to date and I am running Java version 8 update 25.

  • Hi,
It looks like your connection is timing out and eclipse is unable to install. Please download the offline installer. Make sure you delete the contents of ccsv6 folder before you run the installation. Note, CCS 6.2.0 has been released.

  • Danish,

Running the offline installer while disabling anti-virus software did the trick. Thanks!
