Installing CCS 5.5.0.00077 for OMAP-L138 on Ubuntu Server 14.04 (No GUI)

I originally posted this question in the TI Linux forum, but a TI responder referred me here to the CCS forum.

I would like to build code targeted at the TI OMAP-L138 using CCS 5.5 on a Ubuntu Server 14.04 machine. This is the server edition of Ubuntu, so it has no GUI -- it is command line, only.  I would like to use the server to build the product in a continuous integration environment.

I made progress on getting most of the tools needed for our build environment installed on the Ubuntu Server host:

From CriticalLink:

- angstrom-eglibc-i686-armv5te-toolchain-qte-v2012.05.tar.bz2
- release_2012-08-10.run
- release_2014-01-13.run

From TI:

- EDMA3_LLD_setuplinux_01_11_03_01.bin


In particular, I successfully installed the TI EDMA3_LLD_setuplinux_01_11_03_01.bin tool by installing the prerequisites found at:

processors.wiki.ti.com/.../Linux_Host_Support_CCSv6

...then running the installer with the following command:

$ ./EDMA3_LLD_setuplinux_01_11_03_01.bin --mode console

I had no such luck with the actual CCS installation:

$ sudo ./ccs_setup_5.5.0.00077.bin --mode console
Please set DISPLAY. Code Composer Studio v5 cannot be installed in console mode.

However, I did run the following on a Ubuntu _desktop_ machine:

$ ./ccs_setup_5.5.0.00077.bin --help
Usage: ccs_setup_5.5.0.00077.bin [options ...]

Available Options:
--debug run installer in debug mode
--debugconsole run installer with a debug console open
--help display this information
--localrepo [ARG] points to a local copy of the installer
repository
--manifestfile [ARG] ccs_manifest.xml file
--mode [ARG] set the mode to run the installer in
Available values: console, default, silent or
standard
--prefix [ARG] set the installation directory
--response-file [ARG] a file to read installer responses from
--save-response-file [ARG] a file to write installer responses to when the
installer exits
--setupfile [ARG] ccs_installini.xml file
--temp [ARG] set the temporary directory used by this program
--test run installer without installing any files
--update run the installer in update mode
--updaterepo [ARG] points to a local copy of the update repository
--version display installer version information

The ccs_setup_ ... 00077.bin says it has a "--mode console" option.  Am I missing something?

Is there a way to tell the ccs_setup_...00077.bin installer to skip the installation of all of Eclipse GUI items and install only the items necessary for a makefile to compile my source code?

    Ben,

    There is a bug that prevents CCSv6 from installing from a console mode only, but I imagine this may be the case for CCSv5.5 as well.

    Please check the two threads below that discuss options that will help you install both CCS itself and any additional software components.

    I was able to use the offline installer for CCS5.5.0.00077 with the arguments --mode silent  --prefix <installdir>.  I'm guessing this installs all the defaults.  For CCS6 the arguments for a silent install are --mode unattended --prefix <installdir> (https://e2e.ti.com/support/development_tools/code_composer_studio/f/81/t/374161).  I don't believe there is an option to exclude Eclipse GUI files.

    Thanks for the responses.  So I tried the following:

    $ ./check_depends.sh
    Installed versions of glibc and glibcxx: GLIBC_2.18, N/A
    Required versions of glibc and glibcxx:  GLIBC_2.7, GLIBCXX_3.4.16
    Checking availability of libraries in ext-depends.txt ...
    Done.

    Then I ran:

    $ sudo ./ccs_setup_5.5.0.00077.bin --mode silent --prefix /opt/ti/
    [sudo] password for builder3di:
    $

    The install terminated after only a few seconds.  Here are the contents of /opt/ti/ccs5 after the install:

    $ ls -la /opt/ti/ccsv5
    total 1896
    drwxr-xr-x 2 root root    4096 Dec  1 09:10 .
    drwxr-xr-x 3 root root    4096 Dec  1 09:10 ..
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root   34820 Dec  1 09:10 install_logs

    I've attached the install_logs file that resulted from the install.  It appears to be the beginning of an xml file containing a manifest and install flags, but I didn't see any error messages or warnings.  Any ideas?

    Ben,

    I tried to install into /opt/ti as sudo and the silent install failed. I don't see the install_logs file that you are seeing though.  It also looks like running as sudo into a home directy not owned by root works for me.  Can you try just installing into a home directory?  Depending on what you are going to be doing with the installation, you might be able to move the root folder after you install.

The installation logs for CCS 5.5 can be found in $HOME/.installjammerinfo/ccsv5 (if run as an ordinary user) or /var/lib/installjammer/ccsv5/ if installed as sudo. Please zip up the folder and attach it here, I'll take a look as to what's happening.

    Hi Ben,
    I've never come across this before, but it looks like your OS is missing the unzip utility or it's not in your path.
    (error message in log file: Unable to find unzip utility on your machine). Could you make sure you're pointing to unzip via your path, and then delete the /opt/ti/ccsv5/ directory and retry the installation?
