CCS/TMS320C5517: CCSv6 C5517 EVM onboard usb jtag - target configuration test button is greyed out

Part Number: TMS320C5517

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

I've loaded code composer studio version 6 onto 3 different computers now, the latest running Windows 10, and I still can't connect to the USB JTAG on the C5517 EVM.  I need CCSv6 for this particular demo.

The problem is always the same.  The USB driver seems ok and is the right version (according to one e2e post).  The windows device manager shows the "Spectrum Digital TMS320C5517 DSK"  device driver which is at version 6.0.999.2.  The Spectrum Digital DSK-EVM-eZdsp onboard USB emulator connection appears in CCS, but the test button is greyed out even after saving the target configuration.

I didn't test jtag on the evm before I changed the jumpers.  So I don't know if something is wrong there.  Is there a specific jumper that would disable the onboard jtag?

I do have an XDS200 emulator that I connected to the jtag header on the board.  The test connection button worked, but when I went to use it, CCS complained about not having a licence.

Anyone have a solution?

For that particular connection type, the "test connection" button is not applicable. So the behavior you see is expected. Did you try launching a debug session and connecting to the target?

yes, you would see the "test connection" button active for that debug probe. But to use it, you need a full CCS license. You can get one free of charge at the below link:

  • Stef,

You can get a license file for CCSv6 that will get rid of the license issue that you saw.

When using the eZdsp emulator the test connection button will not be active. The button is enabled if the debug probe (emulator) has specified a utility for it. Do you get an error message when trying to launch a debug session?

  • In the past I've tried launching a debug session and connecting to the target without success. However, I just tried it now in an effort to post the error message and it worked. So I'm not sure what the issue was, but it appears to be resolved now. I have successfully connected to the target.

    Thanks for the help.
