I have "MSP EXP432P401R Development Boards & Kits - ARM MSP432 LaunchPad MSP-EXP432P401R" board, with uC TMS432P401R. This board offers on board JTAG for develop and debug tasks; there is XDS110-ET device for this scope.

I have consulted documentation provided about this board. I have found out an interesting procedure, it seems possible to configure this board for program other external TI microcontroller.

Is this possible only for the same IC model (i.e. for TMS432P401R)? Can I connect on board JTAG (with XDS110-ET in this board) with this procedure and program other TI model, like MSP430F5529?

Hi,

Although what you found out is correct - i.e., the built-in XDS110 Debug Probe on the MSP-EXP432P401R can be used to program other devices, specifically the MSP430 family of devices do not share the same JTAG interface as the other device families. Sorry.

So what is the specific list of devices I can program according to XDS110's JTAG interface?
Can I connect to MSP430F5529?

Hi,

The XDS110 product page (TMDSEMU110-U) contains a list of device families supported by this Debug Probe.

No MSP430 devices can be used with this Debug Probe - that includes the MSP430F5529.

I have seen the link posted, very helpful.
If I have understood correctly, TM4C12x is included in this list, so TM4C1294NCPDT can be programmed?

Yes, the TM4C family of devices is fully supported.

In the list of XDS110, is specified devices NOT supported: ARM9 based processors that use adaptive clocking such as OMAPL13x and AM1xxx.

So, there is still something bugging me. I found in datahseet that TM4C1294NCPDTI3 is based on Core ARM Cortex M4F, Family ARM9.
Is this ok? Can I be cool connecting XDS110 to TM4C1294NCPDTI3 uC?

Hi,

The ARM9 core is an ARMv5, while the Cortex M4F core is an ARMv7M, which is a newer generation.

In techincal terms, ARM9 cores require Adaptive clocking while newer generations operate at a fixed clock. Since the XDS110 does not support Adaptive clocking, this turns a connection to an ARM9 unreliable under certain circumstances.

In summary: the TM4C family of devices can be safely used with XDS110.

I have see the MSP432P401R is equivalent to XMS432P401R. My board have XMS432P401R and it can be programmed by XDS110 installed on the board.
So can I connect the same XDS110 with MSP432P401R, just as in the case of TM4C1294NCPDT?

Yes. Both devices are Cortex M devices and therefore fully supported.
