Problems with lightning simulation at output of circuit using OPA172 Spice model

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA172, TLE2061, TINA-TI

Hi All,

The datasheet of OPA172ID indicates that it has short circuit current (Isc) of +-75 mA. However during a lightning transient condition, we have a situation where the output pin of OPA172ID may see a transient current of the order of 7A peak without any external protection. Will the IC withstand a damped transient current (1Mhz frequency) with 7A peak current?

We are facing problems in getting the simulation working with OPA172 for this lightning transient simulation case. However the same circuit simulation runs when simulated with TLE2061. Looks like there is a problem with OPA172 spice model. We need your help with this.

Note: We are using LTSPICE for running the simulations. I am able to only insert picture but unable to send simulation files. I can share it if any mail ID is provided. Kindly do the needful.

Thanks & Regards,
C.Pradeep

  • C. Pradeep,

I ran this simulation in TINA-TI and did not have any issues with the OPA172. I am not sure what kind of output you were expecting and where you were measuring, however, the simulation ran fine with the device. You may have to adjust the LTSpice convergence parameters to get LTSpice to work properly for the device. Unfortunately, we are not allowed to assist with LTSpice simulation issues per the EULA (End Users License Agreement) for LTSpice.

If you need to verify the 7A at the output pin, I would create a separate post for the Precision Amplifiers forum.

  • Hi Britt,

Thank you for the reply. I ran the simulation in TINA-TI also and found the same problem with TINA-TI simulation also. The output voltage at OUT Pin of OPA172 does not clamp to Vcc (15V in my case). The voltage at the OUT pin (VF1 node voltage) sees 800V. Please find the screenshots of TINA-TI simulation circuit and results below.

    Need your help on this.
