I have been trying to use switcher pro to design with the TPS40210. I believe my requirements are within the capability of this part, but switcher pro just gives various errors for my inputs.
I am hoping someone can help with this design.
Requirements:
INput Voltage: 10-17 volts
Output Voltage: 33 Volts
Current: 5 amps
Any help appreciated.
Fred,
While the requirements you provided are independently within the range of operation for TPS40210, all together they are not. SwitcherPro gives a clue in its error message, "Unable to select a high-side MOSFET for this design. ". The FET would need to have Rdson in the very low milliohms and very low gate charge, while being rated for 33V with safety margin. The very extensive SwitcherPro database of available FETs doesn't include one with sufficient ratings. If the load current is reduced to 2.5A, we get a design.
I checked other TI Boost controllers, and found the LM5022 can handle the voltage requirements with up to a 3A load. Increasing the minimum input voltage would also make it easier to get a solution.
For reference, both the TPS40210 and LM5022 are supported by the WEBENCH Power Designer, which is accessible using the entry panel on the TI.com home page.
