For example we usually have a bulk input capacitor that is left open on the schematic (typically "C1"). If you review you analysis page and decide you need less input ripple you can add more capacitance on the input with this open socket. It's similar for the output caps. We leave spots open to add additional caps if you decide you want a more robust design and cost or size is not as important.
