[FAQ] DLPLIGHTCRAFTER: Getting the DLP LightCrafter to work with Windows 10

Part Number: DLPLIGHTCRAFTER

Getting the DLP® LightCrafter™ EVM to work with Windows 10

In order for the DLP LightCrafter EVM to work with Windows 10 the default driver needs to be replaced. Below is one driver that can be used for successful operation.

  1. Navigate to the Microsoft Update Catalog
    1. Select the download button for “Acer Incorporated. - Other hardware - USB Ethernet/RNDIS Gadget” for “Windows 7,Windows 8,Windows 8.1 and later drivers”
  2. Extract the downloaded cab file (use a tool like 7-Zip or similar) and save the driver files to a known location
  3. Plug in the lightcrafter via USB to the Windows 10 machine.
  4. Wait for the incorrect driver to install (if the incorrect driver has previously installed you may move to the next step)
  5. Open the Device Manager and see the devices listed under Ports (COM & LPT). The LightCrafter will be listed as USB Serial Device. In the example below it is USB Serial Device (COM 3).
  6. Right click the LigthCrafter device and select “Update Driver Software”
  7. Select “Browse my computer for driver software
  8. Select “Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
  9. Select “Have Disk…
  10. Navigate to the location of the stored driver you previously extracted and select the file
  11. Select “USB Ethernet/RNDIS Gadget” and click “Next
  12. The device driver will correctly install and the LightCrafter should be ready for use

  • I followed this process on windows 10 and am having problems connecting to the lightcrafter. Specifically, plugging in the lightcrafter usb connection seems to break my network settings. When I click the network icon in the windows notification area, the pop-up dialog does not appear and when I attempt to open network settings (view network status and tasks) in the control panel the control panel hangs.

The driver assigned to the lightcrafter in device manager is:
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\usb8023.sys

  • Hello Brett and welcome to the forums,

I have noticed that Windows takes a long time to open network settings while using this driver. However, it should eventually load if you wait long enough (at least in my experience). As far as the driver itself, does it show up under Network adapters as "USB Ethernet/RNDIS Gadget"? The driver assigned name sounds correct. Have you tried installing it again? I know Windows 10 and this device can be finicky.

    Thanks,
    Kyle
  • Hi Kyle,

I waited over 30 seconds and the notification pop up did not open. I've tried updating the driver as described above and tried installing on a different machine and the same problem occurs.

  • Hi Brett,
Under device manager does it show up under Network adapters as "USB Ethernet/RNDIS Gadget"? I just want to confirm that part got installed correctly. And I've seen it freeze for longer than 30 seconds (just FYI).
