so many 1080p and up DMDs, which one to choose...?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLP3310, DLP4710, DLP480RE, DLP470NE, DLP470TE, DLPA3000, DLPC3437

I'm probably annoying you all by now with similar question but new DMDs and DLPCs keep popping up lately.

Second reason I ask so many questions is we're aiming to build a VR headset which uses DLP and there isn't much done before us to use as reference.

So far 1080p and higher resolutions there are (or soon to be)

1) DLP3310

2) DLP4710

and now also (soon)

3) DLP470TP

1) DLP3310 - for VR wearable device, the smaller the better. But the page says the max fps is 60 which is too low (need 120). Is it a limitation of the DMD though or the DLPC? If DLPC, can't we use the DLPCs of the other DMDs mentioned? If not, is there a better DLPC in the works that will be able to handle 120fps?

2) DLP4710 - again fps is only 60 but I read in the forums that a new DLPC6421 controller is on the works that will allow it to run at 120 fps.

3) DLP470TP - Supports 4K UHD at 60 Hz and Full HD at 240 Hz. Okay, what about something in between, like 120Hz? Even increasing only vertical or only horizontal resolution by x2 from 1080p will be beneficial for VR.

Also there is DLP470TE, DLP470NE and DLP480RE. They are listed as "standard size" chipsets, not pico, but the first two are the same micromirror array size as DLP4710 and DLP470TP which are pico chipsets and DLP480RE is just slightly bigger. Why label them as standard? Just because they can go much brighter than what pico illumination engines can provide doesn't mean they can't be used with dimmer illumination engines. So what is the reason?

  • Hello Armen,

i Can understand you are looking for a DMD and DLPC controller for your VR application with 120fps. Regarding the question you asked please see my answers below :

1.DLP3310 is part of the chipset comprising of the DLP3310 DMD, DLPC3437 display controller, and DLPA3000 PMIC/LED driver. . To ensure reliable operation, the DLP3310 DMD must always be used with two DLPC3437 display controllers and a DLPA3000 PMIC/LED driver and DLPC 3310 supoorts 60fps max.

2 & 3. DLPC6421 will support 120fps and it will be with DLP470TP. Please see the details here : www.ti.com/.../dlp470tp

There are plenty of reasons from brightness, packaging, size and many more to decide the standard.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks,
    Navneet
  • Thanks.

    1) I know that DLP3310 supports 60 fps max right now, I'm asking if its a limitation of the DMD itself or the controller chip, and if it is the latter, are there plans for an IC for it that will support 120 fps?

    2) DLPC6421 for DLP4710 will support 120 fps at 1080p and for DLP470TP will support 240 fps at 1080p, right?

    3) Would also like a response to my DLP470TE, DLP470NE and DLP480RE question.
  • Armen,

    1. No there is no plan to support 120 Fps for DLP3310 but other chipset will provide the 120fps.
    2. DLPC6421 is for DLP470TP and will supoort 120 and 240fps.
    3. I already mentioned in my above answer there are plenty of reasons from packaging, broghtness, interface, size and so on to decide the staandard for DMD chipset.

    i hope this helps.

    Thanks,
    Navneet
  • Can you please also mention if DLPC6421 will be usable with DLP4710 and DLP480RE as well? If yes, what fps will be achievable with DLP480RE since it has slightly more pixels vertically? (1920x1200)
